Quote: Atabey previously said: The last time Cubans were allowed some measure of economic liberty, Fidel grew upset because of the development of "class differences." Back then he put a stop to the liberalization, but now Cuba is facing a challenging position and it's not about holding on, what's there to hold on to?, the real problem is that the economy just doesn't produce enough to meet the needs of the people, and more important for the governing elite, the state's needs to provide for the massive infrastructural demands from decades of mismanagement and neglect. Housing demand is another major issue, and it will not be satisfied by current productive capacity. So Cuba is faced with changing substantially and there exist no more difficult movement for an authoritarian structure than the movement towards liberalization under central control. Cubans are Westerners and not Chinese or orientalist in outlook. The Chinese appear to have achieved for now the balance, but remember The Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. The central government used massive violence against the demonstrators to re-balance the affair. What happens if Cubans protest en mass against the government? Stay tuned, this is going to get interesting. And remember the Castro brothers may only have another 5 years left at the helm. Once they are out of the picture, no one in Cuba would hold the status and power to challenge the people's demands. I'm sure the revolution will march forward. Dispite the hardships much has been achieved. Cuba is the biggest world player in the region and China, Russia, Vietnam etc. are sure to help. S. |
