The perico ripao shows our acceptance of African elements adopted by the Cibaeño Culture. Elvis Presley a white, US American, a Missisippi red neck, came from the south, one of the most racist regions in the United States. "Yet his African influenced music and danced caused a world wide, cultural and social impact. He was nurtured on gospel, blues and country music and was the first white singer to perform in authentic African-American idioms. In 1954 Sam Phillips, president of Sun Records in Memphis, recognized his talent as "a white man who had the Negro sound and the Negro feel." The Cibaeños were the first white, Europeans of Spanish ancestry in the Americas who were able to successfullly express the sound and movement of Africa. Edited on 3/13/2010 5:20 PM by guillermone. |

Well, authentic perico ripiao also sounds African. Question: Why are people from Moca, La Vega City, Jima Abajo (La Vega municipality) and Bonao so dark? Chango ta' veni. |

Most people in the city do NOT look like that. Even many Cibaenos agree that cities like La Vega and Bonao have long been "morenonized". Those light skinned people are most likely from Constanza and Jarabacoa and not natives of the city. Chango ta' veni. |
