Some years ago I read the autobiography of the infamous US pro-wrestler Ric Flair. He related a tale in there about once traveling to Dominican Republic to defend his world title. Apparently after a grueling battle the DR crowd had gotten so crazy that the planned finish (a draw) could not be carried out. In order for Ric and Roddy Piper to get out of the arena safely he was forced to lose to the local champ, one Jack Veneno. The promoters tried to schedule a hasty rematch so Flair could regain his belt, however they still could not pull one over on the Dominican crowd and Flair was forced to let Veneno pin him

Well in the book Flair says Veneno was a complete gentleman and returned the belt. He also claimed the promoters paid him in cocaine instead of dollars. Flair didn't do drugs so he gave the coke to his pal Roddy Piper. Unfortunately the wrestling commission did not recognize the two victories of Veneno as "legit" ( ) so even to this day his name is not in the record books as a world champ. My question for the forum is does anybody know anything about this guy Veneno they could share?

That match happened a looooong time ago.

In the DR, even those who think wrestling is fake know that to this day, Jack Veneno is one of the most recognized and beloved "sports" figure in the DR.

I remember my grandfather taking me to Eugenio Maria De Hostos to watch him "fight" when I was a little kid and to this day I still remember the fun I had.

You mention the name "Jack Veneno" in the DR and most would have an anecdote to tell as there was a time when the guy was more famous that God (well, you know what I mean).

He was so popular back in the 70's and 80's that most Domincans would rather go hungry than not spend their "Lucha Libre" money.

To this day, everywhere he goes, a crowd gathers, EVERYWHERE.

He was also a "money machine". Everything he pitched/promoted turned into a gold mine. His Forty Malt commercials are legendary, as were all other products he "spoke" about.

A true Dominican Icon!. (Just don't ask "Relampago Hernandez". LOL.)

Pro wrestling and the lasting popularity of champions remains one of the most mystifying aspects of all reality

I don't believe any Dominicans went on to the big time, WWE, does anyone know otherwise? Closest are the Colons from PR in WWE right now. They are announced as being 'from the Caribbean' to broaden their appeal, but they also refer to Carlito as the 'San Juan Southpaw' so that tips off their origin. Unrelated but similar marketin is Kofi Kingston who is announced as a Jamaican, speaks with a fake Jamaican accent, but is really a college educated Ghana native.

The WWE's Colons are the sons of Puerto Rican wretling legend Carlos "Carlito" Colon, an icon in PR.

No, no Dominican have made it "big" in the US.

Most don't care as they can make it in the DR.

I doubt they don't care, spending just a few years on WWE television can make your career for life. I just wonder if enough athletes in DR would bother training in pro-wrestling and putting their body through that when they can just swing a bat and probably have better odds of making it big. It literally takes a special character to want to pursue wrasslin' for a living.
