Haiti did not gain its independence in 1804, it only gained a military conflict (with a not much mentioned vital support from the British Empire that leaved the French army with no communications). For France, until 1825 Saint-Domingue (Haiti did not exist) was a rebel colony. The real fight for Haitians came in 1825 against a France without Napoleon and without its armies fighting everywhere in Europe. That was actually the moment for Haitians to fight for their liberty (the moment of truth), the moment their very expensive fortress were built for and in that moment they preferred “to buy” that liberty (and, to these days, only Haitians has taken such decision). France had a lot of assets in Saint-Domingue that was destroyed just by the barbarian actions of the Haitians warriors and that was what Alexander Petion (not a Frenchman) proposed to pay and finally Jean Pierre Boyer started to pay. In 1863 we, Dominicans, said “Just Enough” to Spain and nobody here talked about giving money for our missed liberty. We bravely fought against another European power and, you know what?, without offering any money we gained our liberty again (obviously after a terrible fight). France owes nothing to Haiti. That was a deal (a very bad deal made by a very bad diplomacy), that was the way Haitians selected then and the way Haitians have to accept now. |

All of you use it as usual as the other one: “We are very, very poor black people and you have to accept everything from us or you are a racist”. I am talking about facts, just about facts. In 1825 Haitians needed to fight for their freedom and they made a business of it, just a business. In war, you fight with courage (if you have it). In a business (a safer way to handle things) you do not need guns but you have to pay. In 1825, Haiti did not have what it was necessary to be a free nation in the usual way, it is as simple as that. |
