I don't know, souviens. If things were reversed, I think that haitians would have lost the natural gentleness and hospitality that characterize the campesino way of life on both sides of the fence (seeing as how the majority of the population over there is currently living in the countryside). At least that's what have been happening on the DR, where the increasing urbanization process have made people to become extremely isolated.

Jeme

Honestly speaking, I honestly feel that if the roles were reversed we would have the same level of problems if not worse. Only because, Haiti is roughly half the size of DR, and Haitians would not be receptive to the idea of dominicans coming into haiti in large numbers when they have limited space themselves. Also, haitians are proud people who prefers not to allow their land to be sold or taken over by foreigners, not matter how there situation is. Soo if dominicans were to be the poorer people that comes to the country and taking their jobs, im pretty sure that haitians wouldn't be to lenient with this illegal migration.

As for history, I can honestly say, more people of Haitian descent were part of the Dominican Government, than any Dominican descent person will ever be in Haitian Politics. If we look at history our constitution, Haiti isn't that open when it comes to foreigners having influence in their own land. Though the UN is currently in Haiti, im sure a majority of haitians would prefer that they leave.

Moreover, I think DR and Haiti relations are not as bad compared to other parts of the world. When we take a look at South Africa and Zimbabwe, we see the South Africans taking harsh measures to stop the illegal migration from Zimbabwe. I think if haiti get on the right track, a day might come when dominicans and haitians can both have electricity for 24 hours and move to the 21st century together. It maybe a while, but anything can happen when you put ur mind in it.

This is still going smoothly with such great dialogue. I have to agree with the others Jemesouviens if it was reverse we( haitians) would be very upset and claiming dominican are taking the jobs and are preferred because they are fair skin.
I know I am spilling alot of dirty laundry and might get a smash from my fellow compatriots but this is my outlook on this. I have to say that despite all the B.S. that dominicans put haitains thru they are receptive and way more open to foreignors than we are. It has to do with many dominicans loving anything foreign as better although haitains seems to be teh exception. Obviously due to the cheap labour force of haitians working jobs even the poor dominican feel is beneath. So yes alot of my nationality have swallow there pride. I slept on that and back track. It isn't a crime to revise your initial statement, right?

From my experience dominicans in the upper strata are welcoming to haitians of all hues with MONEY and have come to a mutual agreement not to dwell on the past rather the future especially for immediate family. Although you'll find that individual who holds a grudge but still is receptive because we are feeding him. Now when one starts to trickle down to the barrios is where issues arise due to ignorance and poor dominicans wanting to feel at least better than a haitian for there misery despite that alot of poor dominicans have been welcoming to haitians and have mostly learn that it is better to do business with an honest haitian that a back stabbing thief dominicano which is there own. These are statements I've heard from dominicans..si los haitianos son muy honesto. But is soon as the relationship stringes..that nice haitiano becomes el maldito prieto..los haitianos..I think it is a big complex . Ok, that my psycho analysis..

BTW, I hope you guys like that nice license plate.

Would it read "Nord" if you were living on the Cap?

HAITIANO-JABAO

From "my experience dominicans in the upper strata are welcoming to haitians of all hues" with "MONEY" and have come to a mutual agreement not to dwell on the past rather the future especially for immediate family. Although you'll find that individual who holds a grudge but still is receptive because we are feeding him. Good statement Jabao. If Haiti were on top I don't think Dominicans would be freely welcomed. Now, that most of us agree on that, for you Haitians, think about how Dominicans feel about the invading "foreigners" who are coming to DR to take over land, jobs, etc. It would make Haitians cringle to see Dominicans in the thousands, millions, looking for work and living on there land. Interesting take once you analyze the affects from the other side. DR is definitely receptive to foreigners as we are becoming more of a globalized society. The color of business is green as Jabao has alluded too.

NY4life,

It all comes down to the have nots feeling they are being done over by their government and on top of that some foreignors are invading us. Even the dumbest dominican know they got their independence from the evil bad haitians that slaughtered us. This version is the simpleton one that the idiots on here and most dominicans that don't want to look much deeper want to accept without looking deeper. NY4life alot of dominicans do work in haiti and alot of the other less professionals are illegal and cross the border just by paying the fee. I dont think haitians hold that resentment though. I say this because in the brothel industry in haiti dominicans have had the monopoly for years. I can say decades and they haven't been ran out. Im just looking at in from the other side since in the DR there is alot of haitians..even me sometimes say "diablo..hay mucho de mis compatriotas aqui"...So with that it is safe to say this relationship ain't perfect but consider the bad history it could've been worse. I say it's about 1million haitians or descendants..the other million are dominicans of darker hue that just get lumped up..I think to resolve this issue is to improve my country and have a competitive and equal society where migrating over to the west isn't even worth it. No matter if we are on the same isalnd we have two different cultures. i know both and can say it is very easy for any haitian to accomodate to the dominican culture but it is still different. that's what makes us haitians and dominicans respectively..where are my compatriots..can i hear you outlook..please don't leave me hanging and if you disagree with me ..let me have it..feel free to chime.
