I'll leave it to any interested in discussion to look up the facts on their own, but the basic situation is that Turks have settled the northern third of the island and consider themselves an independent republic from the Greek south. The world does not recognize the independent north, though it is de facto a separate state. Britain, the last of a long line of colonizers of the island, maintains bases there. Depending on who you ask, the current situation is the work of the Brits using the UN to their own purposes. The main lesson for our island is to be wary of foreign forces and the UN posturing as political mediators....often these forces have their own hidden interests in keeping a place divided and perpetuating chaotic local politics. |

Indeed. If anything our own history should have taught us by now to be very leary when it comes to foreigners meddling in our internal affairs. |
