Lautaro I'd also recommend them. Not only is his work solid as Cib says in terms of being heavily sourced, but he also writes in the proper spirit. The two I own are "Worlds Great Men of Color" and "Sex and Race Vol.2" which covers the topic of race & race-mixing in the Americas. They are in print so you shouldn't have a hard time finding them.

"Sex and Race" Volumes 1 & 2 are a must have. "World's Gretest Men of Color" also comes in two volumes, one dealing with the Americas and the other with the old world (I beleive volume one is the one concerning old world figures). In the volume of "World's Gretest Men of Color" concerning the new world there's an extensive entry on Hereaux.

Only fools and imbeciles are incapable of recognizing Heureaux talents, despite his flaws and the crimes of his heavy-handed government. Just the way he convinced Luperon to give him his support is a masterpiece in the art of manipulation that could make Macchiavelli get green with envy had he seen it.

I think Rogers included him in his compilation of great men of color because he was so succesful at what he did, namely govern the Dominican state with an iron fist, at a time when someone who was obvioulsy black held no similiar position in any of the other Hispanic nations in the hemisphere. He also makes mention of his prowess in battle, particularly against the Spanish, which no one can deny or take away from Hereaux. That he was a crafty and succesful bastard can be denied by none, though. At the very least he was much more of a patriot then Trujillo. Though both he and Trujillo owe their rise to events related to occupying forces Trujillo gained his foothold in his later position through collaboration while Hereaux gained his by putting Spaniards to the sword.

There's also the fact that he would aid the cuban independence process by setting a highly efficient spy network, without counting the financial and military aid that he gave to the rebels. Although this help wasn't desinterested, because his ulterior motive was to make the cuban sugar industry to settle its lucrative operations on the DR, an objective that would be successfully fulfilled marvelously.

The only thing that would put a stain to his patriotic reputation is the fact of having sold some border lands to the haitian gov., namely, the entire Plateau Central and its towns (your family's ancestral hometown of Hinche, Saint Michel de la Atalaye, Saint Raphael and Las Cahobas), an act that our historians would never forgive him for, and which was explained by the lack of money that characterized the last years of his dictatorship (to maintain such a governmental machinery as the one he posessed wasn't a cheap endeavour indeed). Also, the loans that the Vicini family and other sugar barons made him in order to maintain this machinery (in exchange for lucrative monopolies over the country's economy) explains a lot the magnitude of their fortunes today (and the influence that they exert over the dominican state, likewise).

Is that your best shot at us, kiddo? Keep it on, then. Unlike some people over here, which can't find the necessary patience in themselves to stand your absurdities, I actually find your rantings oddly amusing, at best. LOL
