Just throwing this up as I think it is relevant to the convo. There was minor intarwebz controversy last week over a Loreal ad where Beyonce appears to have been 'whitewashed' via photoshop. Specifically her skin is lighter than in other photos, and her nose appears thinner. Well I mention it only because of a point I caught today from one commentator; the focus of criticism has been neither her straight hair nor the fact that it is blonde. I'd suggest this is a sign of some acceptance in our communities of dyeing/straightening as pure fashion trend without overwhelming self-hate overtones, whereas lightening your skin is (appropriately I believe) seen as showing racial issues.
