The anti SUV thread.
The purpose of this thread is to post the reasons why all countries, but especially developing countries, should not import/use SUV's and other low milage per gallon passenger vehicles.

Massive oil spills have the potential for destroying our planet - oil money gets into hands that do
not make the world a safer place, SUV's ruin country tracks for farmers and others, huge import costs are associated with these vehicles.

I'm going to start with 3 adverts text from AFEC:

Script for Dream:

The Detroit Project
Dream Car Commercial Script

"It is the first car built for the road and the world around it. It can take America to work in the morning without sending it to war in the afternoon. With a sophisticated braking system that stops our dependence on foreign oil. It gets 40 miles to every gallon with thousands of dollars saved at the pump. The only problem is Detroit won't build it."

Script for Talking Heads:

"Talking Head/Parody": 30

"I helped hijack an airplane. I helped blow up a nightclub. So what if it gets 11 miles to the gallon. I gave money to a terrorist training camp in a foreign country. It makes me feel safe. I helped our enemies develop weapons of mass destruction. What if I need to go off-road? Everyone has one. I helped teach kids around the world to hate America. I like to sit up high. I sent our soldiers off to war. Everyone has one. My life, my SUV. I don't even know how many miles it gets to the gallon."

WHAT IS YOUR SUV DOING TO OUR NATIONAL SECURITY?
DETROIT, AMERICA NEEDS HYBRID CARS NOW.

Script for George:

"George/Parody" : 30

"This is George. This is the gas that George bought for his SUV. This is the oil company executive that sold the gas that George bought for his SUV. These are the countries where the executive bought the oil, that made the gas that George bought for his SUV. And these are the terrorists who get money from those countries every time George fills up his SUV."

OIL MONEY SUPPORTS SOME TERRIBLE THINGS. WHAT KIND OF MILAGE DOES YOUR SUV GET?

RE: The anti SUV thread.
Precisely in many developing countries you can argue that a SUV is a good choice. For example the DR, where our roads are really bad and many places are only accesible with 4x4. The problem is in developed countries, where 99% of suv's never go offroad, making them pointless.

I always thought that oil, which is an import for most countries, should be taxed according to the level of consumption. If you want to use a lot of gasoline for your big suv, you should have no problem in paying a higher percentage of tax per gallon. That will automatically make people that don't really need a SUV to buy another kind of vehicle.

Most vehicles in DR run on propane...SUV's driven in DR make less of an impact than SUV's in USA

Agreed, in fact many of the main roads have enough pot holes that the big wheels help keep your teeth in your mouth...

I suggest removing all the speed bumps (they should be called slow bumps anyway) as they cost a fortune over the years in gas as cars brake, stop and speed up! But SUV's save on gas at every speed bump as they can go faster over them!

A car's tire is no match for some of the monster pot holes in DR... SUV tires can handle much more punishment. I blew out a car tire last time I was near samana... The pot hole came out of no where

Vehicles like the Mini Countryman 4wd can cope with a wide variety of situations. 50mpg plus. diesel.

http://www.lincah.com/2011-mini-countryman

Government should have a pot hole reporting system and tax cars more to fix them. Roads are improving.

If government made a deal with a big manufacturer they could be shipped in knock down.
Also Quads, mokes, mountain bikes etc.

Most of the SUV's I see fill up at the gas stations are unmodified for LPG.

Stop importing SUV's/ trucksc under 30 mpg unless you compete for a permit like Singapore.

I have driven a moke, forrunner to the Countryman over worse than this.

Employing a few workmen would be cheaper than importing oil. Mountain bkes, Trail bikes can
also cope with this. Horses, mules consume no fuel. They will go anywhere? Ever heard of walking boots?
