Question regarding Sammy Sosa
I keep running into a statement made by Sammy Sosa all the time, especially in any Anthro. related subgects on DR.
When I ask for a source, no one seems to be able to provide one, they just repeat what was supposedly heard or said somewhere.

Can anyone provide a source where Sammy Sosa states that he is:
1) Taino
2) A dark Taino
3) Not black
Or anything that is somehow related to how he self-identifies?

Please everyone, do not let this turn into the usual racist debates where everyones' racialist ideology is imposed on others. No insutling comments (no matter how subtle).
Those that mock and insult DR constantly make use of this one comment by one baseball player to patholigize Dominicans and turn them into some sort of cartoonish mindless brainwashed freaks.
This is actually a sociological question, not Anthro. or genetics. Keep it professional.

This is the first time that I have heard (or read) anything of the sort, USADR. Usually, all that I have ever heard from him is his pride of being a petromacorisano, growing up chewing cane over the ingenios and running wildly over the cane fields. So my guess is, if anything, that he's supposed to be proud of the west indian heritage of the province.

Really? It's practically all over the internet in anything regarding 'race' and DR. I guess when I first got here I was in a highly defensive mode due to the fact that my home forums are Anthro. related sites. I know that the online world doesn't always reflect reality, but Afrocentric African Americans with Pan African ideology have been the most vicious attackers on DR (actually any LatinAmerican country with Afrodescendants). Their favorites have been Brazil, Cuba, DR, PR but Brazil & DR are their top choices.

And here I thought that the DR was the only one being bullied by these whiners and complainers. Care to enlighten me about what they think of the brazilian situation?

LOL! The DR is up there in popularity, but Brazil might be number one it varies.
Brazilians get accused of pretty much the same thing, just minus the additional Haitian aspect we have with our border/history/illegal immigration w/Haiti.
Some of them have them ahead (or behind depending on how you look at it) with the usual accusations of racism/black deniers type bs.

There have been some USA type OneDroppist influence trying to get a foothold in Brazil but most resist it because it is an alien concept to them.

Here is an interesting debate regarding the clash of this type of influence regarding Caboclos in Brazil:

RE: Question regarding Sammy Sosa
I don't know if any of you are aware of the seething contempt that I hold for the US Congressional Black Caucus, but really, anyone (dominican or related) that hears or reads any statement made by them about Hispaniola's situation can't help but holding the same grudge that I do. For them, it's as if every misfortune that had ever happened on Haiti's history has to be somehow our fault. That's why I'm not so cheerful for Obama's candidacy for the US presidency, even though I particularly hold him on high regard and the fact that he's a better person (for the world's sake) than the republican mummy. Sorry about the rant, but I felt that I had to get this off my chest.

RE: Question regarding Sammy Sosa
Race and Stuff (RAS) is one forum, but to view the threads now you must become a member:

http://raceandstuff.phpbb-host.com/index-forum.php

HumanBiodiversity Forum is my preferred Anthro. forum, alot more posters from all over the world, and it deals with alot of other topics:
http://www.biodiversityforum.com/

But there server is down (first time I've witnessed this)

The thing is, I'm like one Dominican vs a bunch of foriegners who are going by biased isolated 'byte' sized info. and twisting it out of proportion.
The good thing is that many other Latinos (Peruvians, Mexicans, etc.)often come to our defense and try to explain the Latino view of things.
I'll post some excerpts when the forum becomes available if you guys want, but alot of it wil make you angry/surprised at the ignorance and insults.

lol! Lautaro, there is alot of misinformation either on purpose or not, it seems many are very selective in what they choose to accept as 'fact'.
They pretty much see everything in a binary sort of way, black or white.
Also, it seems DR lacks good public relations or image consultants. The good thing is that I've run into Dominicans with some good knowledge on alot of different issues that have put many of the online 'internet experts' on our culture in place.
Like I said, in real life I have not run into this from African Americans. But the online world brings out the crazies, when the words get heated I call them the AfroNazis (they're the equivalent of black StormFronters, StormFront is a famous racist white racist online site).

It seems that we have a loooong battle ahead of us, USADR. If you have the time, please visit the forums of dr1.com. Although there are some very intelligent dudes out there (like the poster NALs), there are some foreigners sharing a lot of views with the people that you mentioned. Some of the things that they have said out there are downright revolting (specially on the DR/Haiti issue). Plus, many of the said bunch of whiners can't still believe that a great part of our population still posess obvious Taino pheno and genotypes on their DNA, even though reputed anthropologists like Jorge Estevez (which is himself a Taino descendent) have shown clear proofs about the fact.
