True. I've also always said the internet brings out the crazies.
Regarding North Carolina, Charlotte is undergoing a construction boom, a good portion of its population were not born there.
And by the way, the stereotypes go both ways, many East Coast Latinos think all Mexicans look like sometype of American Indian and are surprised when they travel and meet Mexican who vary from that stereotype.
Same thing for us, people in LA think we all look like Sammy Sosa. So it's not limited to just Americans.

"My Hispanic friends hate the fact that the first thing that comes out of an American's mouth is "Are you Mexican?" As though, only they exist... "

Not in the northeast or even in Florida. Unless you look indian most white people in the before mentioned areas would assume someone with my features is Puerto Rican in the northeast and I've often gotten cuban in Florida, as if those two are the only that exist. For the most part whites up here and in Florida know how to distinguish hispanics from the caribbean from those from meso-america.

RE: Question regarding Sammy Sosa
Amoree,

This is my opinion and observation of things. David Ortiz is indeed black but he is not african american. Wyclef Jean is indeed black but he isn't african american. You seem to not grasp that dominican republic has been mixing for a long long time..the mulattos you see are not even by product of white & black rather mulatto with mulatto. So this further complicates the issue and is different from USA segregated society. As JEM said it right Zoe is doing it all for the cash..I can not imagine a dominican born in NE in a dominican enclave does not feel more attachment to their culture rather than race although some are shocked to see dark dark skin dominicans..i guess it's their american influence affecting their thought process.. Zoe is trying to keep a constant job..can't be mad at her....In the USA blacks tend to bond among themselves based on culture and colour in the DR a black guy has the same culture as the white dominican and isn't a subculture within the scheme of things and is just un dominicano. There isn't the shock on culture they both are platano merengue dancing dominicans. I say in this aspect DR is way ahead of USA...Now with the racism based on colour for work i find that odd. Again the american not understanding latin american culture..buena presencia doesnt mean colour preference. I know many dark skin haitians that have jobs in the DR and this hasn't effected them from getting a good job. And you know the DR/Haitian issue..So I think it's African Americans shock that in a job interview appearance plays a part in certain position. I was shocked to see heavy set secretaries with no make up in the USA...jajajjaja..I prefer that nice dressed secretary that makes me forget what was the damn reason I came here in the first place..lolol humour...I think it boils down to culture mis-understanding...any educated and conscious dominican knows the afro heritage..actually i dont even think that should apply for dominicans because in almost all aspect their afro culture is displayed language, food, dance, and last phonotypes. I think this issue arises when these people don't see them as part of the afro diaspora..like we do or the west of the caribbean...again it's due to culture differences and the history with us....If you come down I recommend you going to Museo del Hombre dominicano and you'll see the display of all three that makes up the dominican people..look at my picture which displays dominicans the people of dominican republic..better than words..

USADR if you are going to look for that afro part in you you'll be chasing your tail in circles....it's just there..becuase your dominican..i think dominicans have been mixing too long to find that one afro..it might be from either side although it doesn't appear in physical.. just call urself domincano..that sets it all..wow..culture vs race which one has stronger links..Lautaro..break down manito...cibaeno..your a white dominican punto....top of the food chain...jajjajj...so im assuming ur grandparents would be white anywhere..and i agree with you one hundred percent...USA needs more whites all of a sudden..so the are opening the white club..sooner alot round nose pale skins with pelo malo will be white in USA..lol..Dominicans will be knocking for their white card as soon as the word is out..ok im not politically correct...thank God.. I couldn't resist that last one but everyone honest with themselves knows their is some truth behind my last comment..

Jabao Haitian...

do not always assume the USA was trying to find ways to screw you ...in fact they were trying to accomodate all ....it is by far the most progressive racial country in the world ....Changing on a daily basis ...I love it ...stop looking for the bad news and the conspiracy...look at the history of the last 50 years I lived it and it is astounding ...only in America

Still, you can't deny that they're still waay behind us in a lot of issues, case in point, the fact that it would be now, after two and almost a half centuries of existence that a mixed person (or African American, it depends on you perspective), would be able to run as candidate for the presidency, when we on the DR have already had our fair share of those, and to add insult to injury, it happened on an era when slavery was still your everyday bread.

As for you jabao, you're right, I need to take it easy once in a while, that's why I found rom's ranting funny, instead of flying off the handle as it happened with Arsenio. Some people just can't resist the chance of being made fun at.

RE: Question regarding Sammy Sosa
Great post Jabao. Most Black Americans can't understand that in Latin America things are different. Race and culture are one and aren't separate the way it is in America. Black Haitians, Mulatto Haitians, White Haitians all dance to compas and all know creole (despite the elite and educated sometimes preferring to speak French). Black, Mulatto, and White Dominicans all dance merengue, speak Spanish, and participate in the same customs. Black, Mulatto, White Trinidadians all dance soca, speak Trini English with that West Indian accent, etc. There really aren't strict separations between subcultures like in the US where you have Black American ebonics (not all speak that of course), hip hop, dress style (although all ethnic groups have picked this up as well). Immigrants from Latin America and the Caribbean to the US have gradually picked up those sub-cultures and have assimilated alongside Black Americans and established Latino Americans which also contributes to some of the social problems in modern American society.

RE: Question regarding Sammy Sosa
JabaoHaitian,
Good post! I agree, the mixing has gone on since the beginning (we are Spains 1st colony) that the lines are blurred between what is white or black. So in my case, I've always known I have some Afroadmixture, but cannot pinpoint exactly to any one individual.

Since Zoe Saldana was mentioned, here's a pic of her and actor Victor Rasuk to show our diversity:

Hollywood stereotypes of Latinos do not include those who look too white, too native, or too black.

Here's another Dominican actress, but she gets Latina roles:

By the way Jabao, as a point of reference,my phenotype fits somewhere between these members of Aventura, probably closest to Anthony:
