How can it be that so little family planning is done in poor communities? How can a poor man have up to 4 to 7 children, and many times with different women? How can a poor woman have more than one child, knowing that she will not be able to provide good feeding/health care/education? Don't people understand that children cost money for responsible parents? A likely way of getting out of poverty is for poor people to have smaller families. That way the little money they have will be at least sufficient to bring up the children in a decent way. These children will perhaps be able to break the poverty tradition of their family, as their upbringing would be less precarious than that of children from bigger, poor families. Do you guys think that the DR should have a one child policy like China for poor families? In China many people have benefitted from that and some economists attribute the decrease in poverty in China to this policy. Perhaps a two-child policy would be beneficial to the DR as well... I know it sounds a little communist, lol, but it could be a good thing. Edited on 8/22/2008 8:21 AM by buenoha. |

As things are standing, Hispaniola is the most populated island on the entire Caribbean (20 million), despite being the second one in size. I've always been of the opinion that the only thing that have prevented the ocurrence of major civil strifes and the like in Cuba is the fact that this island's population is conscious about the fact that is an utter act of stupidity not to control one's zipper when going through economic hardship. Another island that could use some of that is Puerto Rico, whose population have already surpassed the 4 million barrier, even though a lot of PR's are leaving the island for the States every year. It's ethically wrong and too many people are having too many kids that they can't feed. You are the light of truth ARKATYPE |

Currently the entire system is broken and in desperate need of repair. A One/Two Child policy would only be burdensome on govt., and society as a whole. It has worked in China because of cultural reasons and Chinese govt. strict control. And so, my fellow "Dominicans", ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country. |

Well, the people you are talking about are not responsible and thus could not care less. In a macho society another notch on the gun is more important than anything else.
