Start with the prestigous Earth University in CR. Earth has a 'day without cars' A Day Without Automobiles on Campusirst Phase of the PorFin Project a Success On April 10, EARTH celebrated “A Day Without Automobiles”. By limiting the use of vehicles on campus, this activity aimed to promote physical activity in addition to contributing to helping the Earth breath easier. As part of the event, the only vehicles allowed to circulate on campus were bicycles, public buses, and EARTH’s electric bus. Additionally, the National Electric Company (CNFL) lent the University a special bus to transport visitors between the main entrance and central campus. “By celebrating a day without automobiles, we hoped to help raise awareness about the effects of the use of fossil fuels on the environment, and also support the use of alternative modes of transportation that minimize carbon dioxide emissions. Through these kinds of activities, we reaffirm our commitment to social and environmental awareness”, said Provost, Dr. Daniel Sherrard. During the day, team leaders and faculty members held “10 Minutes for the Environment” sessions, during which they gave advice to students and staff about how they can help to reduce the impact campus operations has on the environment by making adjustments in their daily activities. Partnering businesses also gave presentations on alternative energy options. This initiative represents one aspect of the University’s overall effort to promote sustainability through a variety of activities such as: reforestation; rational use of resources; and research. Together, these programs enabled EARTH to declare itself carbon neutral in July 2007. Vicente Fox Visits EARTH From March 14-15, the former president of Mexico, Vicente Fox, and his wife Marta Sahagún, met at EARTH with the University’s friend and donor, Abraham Tanus. President Fox learned about EARTH’s philosophy and projects to promote sustainability throughout the humid tropics, both through visits to different areas of the institution and a meeting with EARTH’s Provost, Dr. Daniel Sherrard. As a result of his visit, Vicente Fox committed to donate two full scholarships for Mexican students and to return to EARTH with potential donors. He also expressed his desire to involve EARTH students and graduates in the Fox Center, a non-profit organization that aims to promote democracy in Mexico and Latin America by supporting comprehensive development and strengthening ethical values. According to Fox, projects that the University has implemented successfully such as: rational use of resources; carbon neutrality; biodigestors; and reforestation, will be part of a model city project being developed by the Fox Center. Through discussions of these and other ideas, this visit established the basis for a mutually beneficial collaboration that will contribute to the sustainable development of the region. http://www.earth.ac.cr/ing/noticias.php S. |

" You can never get enough of what you don't need to make you happy. ~Eric Hoffer You have succeeded in life when all you really want is only what you really need. ~Vernon Howard The only reason a great many American families don't own an elephant is that they have never been offered an elephant for a dollar down and easy weekly payments. ~Mad Magazine Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends.... Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts. ~Henry David Thoreau The poverty of our century is unlike that of any other. It is not, as poverty was before, the result of natural scarcity, but of a set of priorities imposed upon the rest of the world by the rich. Consequently, the modern poor are not pitied... but written off as trash. The twentieth-century consumer economy has produced the first culture for which a beggar is a reminder of nothing. ~John Berger Racial injustice, war, urban blight, and environmental rape have a common denominator in our exploitative economic system. ~Channing E. Phillips, speech, Washington, D.C., 22 April 1970 " Freedom from an eploitative economic system. The freedom of a well preserverd and maintained envioronment with little or no pollution in which to live a long and happy life. Freedom to have an education centered on philosophies that develop as fully as possible each persons potential. Freedom for all people to be free from excessive worry regarding health through a well planned health service. Freedom of good transport systems without excessive risk of injury/death. Freedom from mounds of trash through recycling. ................... Should I go on........ S. |

Consumerism is freedom!!! Certainly not - consumerism is slavery! Consumerism is slavery Consumerism is slavery. Modern life, which is based exclusively on the constant acquisition of consumer goods, is the main cause of those feelings of depression, anxiety, and loneliness that accrue in so many people’s lives today. Unlike past forms of slavery, however, there is no specific delineation between human masters and servants; rather, it is an enslavement to ideas and beliefs. We chain ourselves willingly to things we simply do not need. This slavery is better appreciated when we deconstruct it. First, modern consumer life enslaves the labor of individuals, tying everyone to a model of social organization that seeks to extract natural resources from the earth and convert them into consumer products. Thus, every morning, millions upon millions of people wake up, commute to work on overcrowded transportation systems so that they can go to an office building where they sit and work with other people, many of them relative strangers, using their brains to accomplish a task that was given to them by a higher up. Going to work is represented as a choice: since there is no taskmaster or man with a whip forcing people to do things, there is a facade that no one is forced to do anything. But coercion is inherent, because if you don’t go to work, you can’t earn a wage, and without a wage it is impossible to secure the basic necessities of life (food, water, shelter). There is no opt-out provision, no way to exit the long hours of work and go somewhere else where people might choose to live as they please. This constriction of human potential leads to misery. How many people today fear the ringing of their alarm at some ungodly hour, awakening them to yet another day of some mind-numbing task which bears no relation to their own true wants and desires! How common is the desire to find the “perfect job,” even when such a job cannot exist — for all jobs are tied to the machinery of consumption and possession. Over time, there is an existential sense of boredom, discontent and loneliness attached to everyday life, which becomes compounded with the realization that there is no end in sight. http://www.demandmore.org/2006/09/19/consumerism-is-slavery/ S. You seem to have woken up with an inventive mind today - its just unfortunate your words have no connection with reality! http://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/2004/02/children-ads.aspx Making cycle tracks gives people freedom to cycle - making giant highways gives people freedom to use SUV's trucks. Making both gives people more freedom not less. Driving cars/trucks in cities likes Santo Domingo gives people freedom breathe polluted air. Providing education in green sustainable agriculture in addition to conventional agriculture gives people more freedom not less. Not providing public transport forces, in a practical situation, people to buy cars, and because budgets are limited less free to play golf or buy gold coins. Not providing healthy food in shops in inner cities, in a practical situation, to buy unhealthy food. Your inventive mind is somewhat warped - I describe more freedom not less. S. S.
