Yeah those failed policies that the left have been pushing for years like civil rights and desegregation, equal pay for equal work, minimum wage, fair working conditions, disability pay, social security. Shal i go on>? This is the type of change that the left pushes. The right fought long and hard against each of these things which are now fundamental to our society.

Nanny State!

Actually it was mainly the Democrats who fought against desgregation and civil rights in the 50's and 60's.

RE: Obama's impact...
texxashoe - well researched and thorough. Yet I was speaking of Left and Right, not Republican and Democrat. I am not registered to any party. I was arguing against critcism of "change" not the history of the republican party. You speak of the history of the parties as if John McCain and George Bush follow in the foot steps of Lincoln and that Obama is somehow the racist reactionary. I am saying those who have pushed for change in the past have often been shown to be on the correct side of history, at least in the examples we both have emphasised. You even said it your self, racists in the democratic party became republican in the 60's, i believe we are in 2008, not 1958, so i will tend to vote with the party that supports social change and supports the disenfranchised and those who have not gotten a fair shot at the American Dream. Taking that into concideration I believe that I would have supported republicans in pre-1960's era, since they took up the cause of the marginalized people.
Thank you for your well written and researched comments texas, I will write more but i have to get back to work!

Regretfully, antonioj, anthonyC is right about the part of the democrats being segregationist hardliners on the 50's and 60's. You only need to look at any book about the history of the Civil War, the Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Movement to see extremely racists views that the democrats held about this issues. It would take Lindon Johnson's campaigning for Civil Rights to break the century old stranglehold that the democrats held on the US South. Mockingly enough, the democrats' movement to revert the civil rights conquests that the republicans implemented after the Civil War would be called "the Redemption".
