Gettign rid of the army.
So i have always thought that the DR having an army is unnecessary. I think that like a number of other countries DR should disband the Fuerzas Armadas Dominicanas. What would they do with the people in the army? put them to work in other agencies. re-allocate them to the CESFRONT, the anti drugs agency (can't remember the name) and the navy. I think something like this would be cost-effective and help the DR manage things better. Who is our army fighting, Haiti? No, DR has not had a war in a very long time and our main enemy (los haitianos) do not have an army and will not invade us by force. I think that by moving these guys to agencies that really need a larger budget and attention can actually help DR get things like human and drug trafficking under control. Currently having an army is a waste of money and resources, at least i think; What do you guys think about this?

DR should follow the lead of Costa Rica and disband its armed forces. Yes, have border guards and naval patrol officers. But the vast army that traces its inception from the USA Military government of occupation should be disbanded pronto. Better to spend the dollars/pesos on education, especially K-12. Trujillo spent close to 20% of the nation's budget on the Armed Forces, and you can see the results.

Yes i agree Atabey more money should be invested in education, but we also need an army. That should be active in the border, afterall we don't have any enemies. The real problem is drug interdiction and Haitian illegals foremost.

Costa Rica was able to " disband" their army by just changing it's name and becoming more of a border/police force. Costa Rica has Artillery and anti-aircraft batteries...hardly the stuff of just a police force.
Of course Costa Rica was also able to do this because they have the support of the US and it's mighty Military. Back in the 1980's when the commies in Nicaragua were causing all kinds of problems U.S. "advisers" were combing the border and pushing the Sandies back across the border on more than one occasion.
Proof of dreadlocks Bigotry.

Two things were at stake during the early 1980s, the Reagan Administration wanted to roll back the Sandinistas, and Costa Rica found itself in a state of bankruptcy.

And so the Monge Administration got on its knees and accepted hundreds of millions of dollars from the Reagan Administration in order to survive their bankrupt state; of course, national sovereignty or its alleged existence in small states was the price of the "understanding." The US got its on the ground base force for the Contras and later the Costa Rican President, Oscar Arias played a great gambit that forced the Sandinista regime into accepting real elections, which they lost. Fidel Castro was adamant that the Sandinistas Not accept the election deal, but the Sandinistas thought otherwise, and they LOST As for the police forces and army, I'll just state that were DR to have a similar outcome, a vast difference would be the result in DR from its current posture. Its spending priority, too, would witness a significant anti-militaristic development. All good outcomes for DR. The militaristic attitudes of a largely ill-educated populace has ill-served our nation for too long. Better to use the resources on K-12 education. We all would be the beneficiaries of such an historic change.

What Militaristic attitude? The D.R.'s Military has been treated like a redheaded stepchild. Soldiers are underpaid and any given old and obsolete equipment. Anything of worth that is used by the military has been given to them by the US.
The Airforce has been a joke for years. The Tucano deal is just a drop in the much needed re-equipment program that is needed. Their Transport and logistics situation is a sick joke.

The Army is a paper tiger. If Haiti ever gets ot Sh*t together they will cause huge diplomatic headaches.

The Navy is the best equipped branch but even they are stretched to the limit.

In a perfect world I want all the thieving and corruption stopped so the military can be trained and equipped properly!!!

Unfortunately if they were to budget more money for the Military most would be lost in the typical Dominican way.

AC,

We don't live in that perfect state of affairs and so must deal with the DR and all its warts. Spending more monies on the armed forces would just be throwing good money after bad investments. Better to streamline and cut back the forces, if the armed forces total elimination is not possible at this moment. I would trim the forces down to a well manged and professionally trained force. With educated, well provisioned soldiers constituting the force. The navy and the border patrol units need to have excellent training and resources. The savings to go to K-12 education. The USA can provide cover for any would be invader. A few bases might even be moved to DR to save money in the states or Puerto Rico Of course, to interdict drugs and other illegal activities.

The most corrupt government institution in the D.R. is by far the Education system. Any extra monies will be used to line people's pockets. The rules are created so that nothing can be done to prevent it short of the President committing Political suicide and taking control.

You seem to forget 3 things.
#1. Hypocrisy. The same people who call the US evil and imperialistic will be the same ones who will be screaming for help from the US when the sh*t hits the fan.

Which leads to....
#2 Americans are getting tired of the Hypocrisy. Don't be surprised if when the D.R. most needs it the US Cavalry doesn't saddle up.

#3 Haiti has the US congress in their pockets through the Congressional Black Caucus. They will always take the Haitian Side.....Bo do otherwise would run the risk of being called Racist.
