The bus lanes and metro should compensate. It is pointless having fights every day in the city over parkig spaces and the normal streets of the city cluttered with junk cars. Many large cities exist and thrive without overpasses and underpasses etc. The country pays an enormous penalty importig cars and gasoline, Also environental damage and damage to tourism. Car ownership should be on the basis of need, purchase of parking space and auctions such as in Singapore, " Car ownership in Singapore involves the following: A recent Straits Times article explains the costs of car ownership in Singapore. A car starts with an OMV (Open Market Value). This is determined by Customs, and takes into account the cost price, freight, insurance, handling plus whatever. Added to that is: •ARF (Additional Registration Fee): 110% of OMV •COE (Certificate of Entitlement): You have to have this before you can buy a car. The price is determined by an aucttion system. Currently the COE for a Corolla is around $10000. •Excise Duty: 45% of OMV •GST (Good & Services Tax): 5% of cost including excise duty •Registration Tax: $140 •Road tax: $1000 per year for a Corolla •Transfer fee: 2% of the vehicle’s value Whew! So our $20,000 Corolla can grow to $75000 with all the extras. Added to that is: •ERP (Electronic Road Pricing): A clever system that removes money from a cashcard as you drive under a gantry. Used duing peak hours for controlling traffic flow – oh, and gaining revenue. •Fuel costs: Around $1.40 a litre •Maintenance: Ever tried to service a modern car? Ya gotta pay someone to do it. •Tyres: They change them every year •And so on… " DR faces much the same problems as Singapore. I don't know why 'E' is pushing roads all the time. I express the view that they are mostly undesirable and unnecessary in the urban space. Certainly Santo Domingo becomes less attractive as more roads are built and this adversly affects all people who live there. Road closures , not building should be celebrated. S. i'm curios ABC what condition is your car in? and what does it cost you to own and operate? and do you fight over parking space? |

The car used to spend most of its life in the apartment car park in the UK. When moving to the DR I saw no need as its a small island with quite good bus services. Why cause all that pollution and import of gasoline? Pretty anti-social don't you think unless its a person with acutal need for a car; doctor, police etc. ? Buses/coaches also employ local people to drive and maintain them. S. Edited on 9/25/2011 9:02 AM by abc200. |

Car owners not only impose their point of view on other people when they drive in cities - they also cause pollution, jams, degrade the environment with noise, cause loss of jobs by importing cars and fuel. This makes the Dominican economy non-competitive. E glorifies these creatures in their tin boxes on page after page - I just point out in a few posts the harm they do. Seems there is a certain lack of tolerance and fair discussion - right? S. |

She posts no pictures of the problems its true. No pictures of parking arguments. No pictures of the unemployed that can't find jobs due to the dollars going overseas to buy cars, overpasses, gasoline. Instead of the money being used for local produce, restuarants etc. No pictures of the hospital departments that deal with chest complaints of inner city residents. No pictures of the turned off tourists that don't visit the chaos of Santo Domingo. No pictures of the stallholders trying to sell local produce with stupid people in their tin cans interrupting their flow of customers. No pictures of young people dodging the traffic lights trying to sell phone cards at great hazard to their health.. No pictures of inadequate and overcrowded bus services that could be remedied for a fraction of the cost of her 4 lane highways. Just her supid idiot highway pictures that taken with a stupid camera demonstrate a way of life alien to most on the planet - and most in civilized democratic countries. S. |
