PROPOSAL

BEHS: The Coast-South route should be a viable work

TO LOOK THE CONSENSUS OF ALL SECTORS

The project is under discussion for several years, but now no possibility of its construction.

Luis Eduardo Diaz Franjul
Listin Diario Special
Barahona

Currently the Cibao-South road project is discussed from the environmental point of view only. The Stock Ecotourism Hispaniola (BEHS) could agree to the bid submitted by the Ministry of Public Works to reconstruct the road section Top-Rancho Piedra Blanca-San Jose de Ocoa, or even match the productive sectors of La Vega who claim reconstruction and expansion of the highway Constanza-San Jose de Ocoa. While other routes shuffled Cibao ocoeños support the Public Works to link the North to the South.

The vision is about the project BEHS Cibao-South, encompassing the provinces Santiago, La Vega (Constance), San Juan and San José de Ocoa, to the point boundary that divides the provinces Peravia and Azua, in the Bay of Ocoa . To begin, the first stretch of road would end in Constance, the second from Constance to the point that divides the provinces San Juan and La Vega, and the third, from Constance to the point that divides the provinces Peravia and Azua, in the Bay of Ocoa .

With the integration (boundary points) San Juan provinces, Peravia and Azua revealed comparative advantage from the point of view, agriculture and tourism, which would also involve the provinces of La Vega (Jarabacoa and Constanza), Santiago, Santiago Rodriguez, Valverde, Montecristi and Puerto Plata.

As part of the South Coast-stands out as the Cibao agricultural region par excellence, with outstanding airports Santiago and Puerto Plata for cargo and passenger transport to the international level. Do not forget that the birth of massive inbound tourism began in Puerto Plata, today with some 13,000 hotel habitalciones. It also highlights the zones located in the provinces Santiago, La Vega, Monsignor Nouel, Espaillat, Valverde and Puerto Plata. The ports of Montecristi and Puerto Puerto Plata also facilitate the transport of cargo and the arrival of cruise ships.

In the South stand Barahona and Pedernales provinces, from the point of view of tourism, and to a lesser degree Peravia. For the port of Barahona are made exports of coffee, sugar, gypsum, blocks and sand for construction, among others. The main agricultural products are coffee Barahona, sugar and bananas, without leaving the free zone of Batey Central, like the Pedernales.

At present the BEHS has submitted a preliminary report to the company marketing strategy Dominican Airports Century XXI (Aerdom), in the interest of reviving the domestic and international air transportation through the airport Maria Montez in Barahona, connecting Santo Domingo airports , Puerto Plata, Santiago.

The marketing strategy is to seat tickets, accommodation, excursions and city tours in the city of Santo Domingo. This is due to the greater amount of natural resources and ecotourism attractions are in the following areas: (a) Area or tourist destination in the Southwest Region, (b) Jarabacoa-Constanza area and its surroundings, (c) Northern Range or Sierra de Montecristi, in turn Northwest and its environment.

(+)
A NOTE ON THE PROJECT

Yet there is a problem to solve. The Cibao-South road would cross the Cordillera Central (Jarabacoa and Constanza areas and their surroundings), which is rich in scenic, yet the main reservoir of water and biodiversity of the country, so that environmental studies are needed to determine routes alternatives in the event that such studies reflect environmental damage in the Cordillera Central. Therefore the Ministry of Public Works should get their hands on environmental studies of the Central Cordillera before justifying the construction.

How to get [Dominicans] to walk
21 February 2012 Last updated at 19:06 ET Help

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-17107653

US cities built in the 20th Century have long catered for a population that prefers to take the car to shop, dine and work. But an ageing population and a young professional workforce looking for an urban lifestyle have forced city planners to reconsider the existing road and pavement infrastructure.

But how do you remake a city into a pedestrian dream, and how do you re-educate the public about its transportation choices?

The BBC's Franz Strasser went to Raleigh, North Carolina, where an unsanctioned street sign campaign called Walk Raleigh caught the attention of city officials and pedestrians alike.
