The firsts invasion of Caamaño or the Cubans? Prior to any invasion of Caamaño it was Cubans who unsuccessfully attempted to invade DR and prior to that Dominican dissidents of the Trujillo regime from Cuba.

CAYO CONFITES , they where exiled Dominicans in Cuba, Fidel Castro volunteered to help and he joined the Dominicans.

I should have written "the last recent invasion that came from Cuba", meaning using the experiences and lessons from the Cuban conflict guerrilla war and tactics.
Cayo Confites was much before Castro and did not progress to the mountains, having been decimated
by the Trujillo army and air force that had been waiting for them.

But perhaps had he been given more training aid and Cuban/Fidel support he could have been successful. Caamaño invasion was well after many years of Russian Military (advisors)influence in Cuba, which Caamaño may have been able to exploit. But I believe this really was no more in Fidels long term goals as his long time foe Trujillo had long been eliminated.

I think Fidel didn't want to help Caamaño more than absolutely necessary as he did not like him and trusted him less. This has been what I gathered from the between the lines testimony of Dominicans and Cubans alike that were in Cuba at that time and have written about their experiences.
Castro had sort of a unwritten non-aggression pact with the US and the timing to support the invasion of
the DR had passed and Caamaño had lost most of his volunteer army as well as the Dominican
counterpart, both politically as well as the military wing who was snitched and destroyed before the landings.
He had many desertions while in the Cuban training camp and was only supported by the few men that accompanied him in his desperate attempt to relive the glory of the 1965 revolution.
It appears that Caamaño's was not in touch with the reality of the Dominican campesino
of those days, being traditionally a pro government sympathizer and loyal to the establishment.
