This is all true, many dominicans think that if you can get to New York you will instantly have a better life and live in a nice place. ive also seen so many dominicans here in washinton hegihts and beyond going through extreme hardships, living in studio apartments with 6 other ppl, getting robbed and not being able 2 call police bcuz their illegals, having their homes burn up in flames and then getting deported when someone finds out they were there illegally, and not being able 2 progress bcuz the older genaration cant learn english and the younger genaration in response to their situation turn to selling drugs. its so much that i would advise ANY and ALL dominicans thinkin about taking a yola not to. why risk your life to go through the same amount if not More hardship here then you would back in DR. it might be hard in our country but it is OUR country and its up 2 us to make it better. ![]() |

NYC is tuff for a first timer, but there are so many Dominicans that can help you find work. Other areas in the US might be better for first time Dominicans. There are many Dominicans in Texas now because in Texas most are illegal anyway. I don't recomend yola for anyone... The ocean is too powerful to die just to come to USA. But I hear you, my cusins in NYC live in a tiny studio with like 300 people in that building... was punched in the nose in the stairs of his apartment building because the wanted his ipod... takes like 3 trains just to get to work... no car because there is no parking... that is not life man |

But a Dominican straight from the Island needs to be in the island. It is the place he or she knows meanwhile you come to NYC for what? To work as a janitor or in a bodega or in a supermarket like my cousin making 7 dollars an hour? Is that really worth it? I dont think so. I was so upset at my parents for so many years for making me live in the projects in the bronx in the cold, poor, made fun of in public school because I did not wear brand name close and all that bull, man if it was me I wouldve been sembrando platano, yuca yautia y criando pollo bebiendo y al final del dia todo se te quita con una presidente bestida de novia! Dominicans from the island need to be where they are meant to be and if you want to progress carajo metete a la UASD and become something. Y depue coje un curso en Intec aunque sea a base de prestamo like my uncle did en la UNPHU n get a masters conio a ve si no cojen en el sector privado where they pay much better. It is all relative because my uncle is a doctor but he knew that public hospitals dont pay well so he got his phd and got a job in a private hospital making 200 mil pesos a month y ve a ve adonde vive ahora carajo pa que tu vea! |

Oje man you are so right. All of my relatives that decided to stay in the DR and not immigrate to NY made sacrifices went to school and became professionals and those that didn't became self employed with small microbusiness that eventually grew into big a business and almost all if not most are doing relatively better then me. Yes, I make a decent salary drive a nice car and a big house. But back in the DR I see that they have a much better life. I feel stuck in the middle class rut paying bills and taxes. You make a little extra money and the IRS kills you. It seems to me like they enjoy life more and work less and live just as good or even better then me and they did it with out the need to leave their country of birth. In DR once you have your house paid, you don't have to pay the crazy property taxes like here in USA. But I know alot of people that have left DR and are owners of the bodegas... Believe me they make more than 200,000 pesos per month. I think you have to work hard and have alittle luck too. The right business in the right location can help you retire faster and get back to living in DR. |

What's the point? It was just like my first trip to Cancun, Mexico. Most of all the bars and restaurants were American or American styled franchises. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against them, It was all nice, fine and dandy, but I felt like I was in Miami Beach. I did not need to fly into another country to get the same experience I have back home. It is like going out to dinner for a special night out on the town and I end up ordering "la bandera'" arroz, abichuela y carne. Why in the world would I do that, get the same thing I have at home? Of course for some people, that is all they know or would care to eat. But in my case I would not miss it and can do without. If there is something I hate is "cookie cutter" stuff. Same goes with urban developments. You go into a new housing project and all the houses look same. Like most places around the world, the DR is following and falling into the same trap under the name of "progress." I think there will be a time when everything will all be the same; you would not be able to tell the difference between one place or the other. Oh, how boring.........yuck!!!! Then again I realize that change is good and had it not been for change, we would still be living in trees or caves and writing on stone. But that is precisely my point, "CHANGE" is good for something new and different, not change for something similar to the same thing. I hear you... I had pizza hut once in Santiago and it was because I was buzzed and just wanted anything in my belly. I always love the empanadas and all of the street foods in Santiago. Why eat at papa johns when you can have a real plate by the monument in Santiago This must be for mommy and daddy's kids that have enough pesos to eat here. I know that the average Dominican will not be able to eat at papa johns... Why spend 250-350 pesos per plate when you can buy a empanada for 30 pesos? LOL YOU ARE SO IGNORANT, I LAUGH EVERYTIME A DOMINICAN SAYS " HIJO DE SU PAPI Y MAMI" can only afford a freAkin Papa johns pizza..beucase that is not true there is lots of high and middle class people around here that can afford them the same as in the U.S... IGNORANT!! at least people here don't work like dogs as in the U.S, and not that the unemployment rate in the U.S the same or worst then DR there is more reason for Dominicans living over there to come here and get a job!. YOU THAT CRITICIZE SO MUCH THIS COUNTRY ARE JUST A BUNCH OF HATERS OR DOMINICANO ARREPENTIDOS! |
