What's the point? It was just like my first trip to Cancun, Mexico. Most of all the bars and restaurants were American or American styled franchises. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against them, It was all nice, fine and dandy, but I felt like I was in Miami Beach. I did not need to fly into another country to get the same experience I have back home. It is like going out to dinner for a special night out on the town and I end up ordering "la bandera'" arroz, abichuela y carne. Why in the world would I do that, get the same thing I have at home? Of course for some people, that is all they know or would care to eat. But in my case I would not miss it and can do without. If there is something I hate is "cookie cutter" stuff. Same goes with urban developments. You go into a new housing project and all the houses look same. Like most places around the world, the DR is following and falling into the same trap under the name of "progress." I think there will be a time when everything will all be the same; you would not be able to tell the difference between one place or the other. Oh, how boring.........yuck!!!! Then again I realize that change is good and had it not been for change, we would still be living in trees or caves and writing on stone. But that is precisely my point, "CHANGE" is good for something new and different, not change for something similar to the same thing. I hear you... I had pizza hut once in Santiago and it was because I was buzzed and just wanted anything in my belly. I always love the empanadas and all of the street foods in Santiago. Why eat at papa johns when you can have a real plate by the monument in Santiago This must be for mommy and daddy's kids that have enough pesos to eat here. I know that the average Dominican will not be able to eat at papa johns... Why spend 250-350 pesos per plate when you can buy a empanada for 30 pesos? LOL YOU ARE SO IGNORANT, I LAUGH EVERYTIME A DOMINICAN SAYS " HIJO DE SU PAPI Y MAMI" can only afford a freAkin Papa johns pizza..beucase that is not true there is lots of high and middle class people around here that can afford them the same as in the U.S... IGNORANT!! at least people here don't work like dogs as in the U.S, and not that the unemployment rate in the U.S the same or worst then DR there is more reason for Dominicans living over there to come here and get a job!. YOU THAT CRITICIZE SO MUCH THIS COUNTRY ARE JUST A BUNCH OF HATERS OR DOMINICANO ARREPENTIDOS! so only 10-15 % of the population will be able to afford papa john's? Hey don't you see all of the poor people with no jobs in DR? Or are you blind? I'm not blind! and by the way the real unemployment rate in DR is less than in the U.S 10% vs 4-5% if you didn't know!.. more than 35% of the population can afford a regular no so expensive menu from any American or local franchise. |

Like many of the taxi drivers... Once they are making alittle profit their car breaks down and they are back to square one. |

That is true dread. Sicar, you might be trying to live out of your budget and that might be why you feel trapped in USA. Stop spending on shoes, clothes, and car, you might have some money to go out and enjoy the city. Or do you use those clothes to go back to DR and impress people into thinking that you have alot of cash? |

May I add that there is also a difference between being employed and being UNDERemployed. Edited on 11/20/2009 3:05 PM by cibaeño75. "If you're going through hell, keep going." - Winston Churchill |

Still alove dread and glad to hear from you...indeed, the unemployment numbers are skewed to say the least...the real unemployment figures would just be sheer dynamite in the climate that currently exists.
