I have seen lots of award ceremonies for children and young adults sice I have been in the DR. Also talent competitions and shows, sports competitions etc. Some countries are taking the lead on sustainability. When I was at school we were trained in beekeeping. Now schools in the UK are actively promoting sustainability by way of competitions. Garden Competition Shelley College took part in their first ever Garden Competition on Sunday 28th June at Beaumont Park. We won the Secondary school category and then went on to win the prestigious title of Best in Show receiving a £10 gift voucher from Armitages Garden Centre and £25 cash along with an impressive engraved Rotary Award. There were several schools represented from across Huddersfield. The design inspiration came from initial research carried out at RHS Harlow Carr, our commitment to Sustainable Development and we wanted a design that would appeal to young children. Thanks go to all students, parents and staff who grew plants and vegetables from seeds for this garden. Special thanks to Mr Scott and Mrs Toon for helping to assemble the garden in the poly tunnel and on the day. Our E team members provided our final design, design brief and labels. A big thank you to Mrs Stansfield for our display for the garden as it was exceptional and really impressed the judges, and a final and biggest thank you to the students on the day who were outstanding. They were superb ambassadors for Shelley College. Students who helped on the day: Daniel Beech Yr 12, Beth Lockwood Yr 12 Kieran Moxon Yr 10, Chris Briggs Yr 10, Ryan Chapman Yr 10, Alex Greaves Yr 10 Stella Greathead Yr 9, Ellie Williams Yr 9, James Stafford Yr 9, Nathaniel Mitchell Yr 9 http://www.shelleycollege.org/news/Garden%20Competition.html My impression is also that there is much inappropriate use of chemicals and pesticides in the DR - including some I have observed on store shelves that are banned in many other countries.
