Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe was vilified by motorists for widening sidewalks and replacing car lanes with bike and bus corridors. He's been accused of trying to eradicate the automobile from the French capital. But the new bike scheme has been so successful that his poll numbers are shooting up.


Paris auto numbers are 25% down thanks to improved public transoort - rent a bike etc.

For the DR advantage may be that fewer cars need to be imported through good utilization of rental cars. All government officials going about their business could be required to use one or public transport or preferably a hired bicycle.
