the problem with the proposed GM bailout is that the 20 billion might help in addressing the legacy costs, like health care and pensions, which drive up the costs of manufacture. but the structural problems remain, because contracts will have to be renegotiated, or we will just rebuild the legacy costs all over again. GM has always had the business model to make maximum profit per unit. that is why they built huge SUVs and trucks, because the bigger they are, the more profit per unit. that is why they never bothered to build little things like a Honda Fit. now, they are way behind the curve. do you know that on Friday last, Ford and GM, jointly, had less than 4 billion dollars in cash? 2 billion will take GM to the end of this month, maybe. without a capital injection of around 20 billion, it is bankrupt!! Obama and the dems do not want it to go under, because their political platform was built on a covenant with workers and the middle class, which would be decimated; 3 million indirect jobs lost. the question is whether or not the treasury has the money. with all these bailout dollars, the US dollar has been sliding further and further down; the Chinese sovereign wealth funds are going to ask for something like an increase in the interest payment to offset the losses in the dollar. it is very convoluted. i cannot wait to see how it pans out!!

Not to be outdone let's not forget there have been alot of indirect subsidies, and dumping on the part of the asian automakers, I think the americans overall are building decent cars, we have been programmed to think of the imports to be superior. I think the best for survival for GM is to have the chinese buy a 30% stake on the company, GM will benefit from cheap labor, huge market, and readily available cash, Otherwise will be back again at the same position in 2 years, should GM consider filing for chapter 11, this should give them room to breath while re-structuring and re-tooling,also
Ford is doing quiet well in Europe, and GM brand Buick is the most popular in China.
We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.

RE: Haitian Invasion of the Dominican Republic
I think that the U.S. auto's have improved dramatically in the last 10 years but they have been playing catchup for so long that any attempts to become industry leaders are ignored. FORD several years ago was the first to see the light ( perhaps too late) and began diversifying its offerings.

GM was producing and developing huge gas guzzlers as early as the beginning of the year. The said they didn't see it coming. And these are execs making six figure income, and they didn't see it coming. I saw the housing bust 4 years ago and this financial debacle two years ago, and I'm no where near six figures.
Why wont Dminincan Republic prosper?

Because Dominicans are just plain to Stupid

I'm liking the direction this thread is going but I'm skeptical about one thing.......ARE THOSE COMPANIES BEING HONEST? Some CEO's are monsters man if they see an opportunity who to say that they are not just lying about their financial gains just to make an easy buck off of the American people? but then again what if they are being Honest? Now a few days ago all the so called hot shots from the global community met and discuss their affairs and the little countries were not included as if we are not part of the Globe. Sad to say but that's how I saw it. When the meeting is in regards to how they can enrich their pockets you only hear about the G8 meetings when they are in trouble you see the G20 meeting when the world is going down to hell then they will want countries to give up their sovereignty Like they did in WWII. Call me what you will but i think that meeting that took place earlier this week should have been assembled like the UN meetings where every country can participate and have a say so.....Call me what you will but I call it how I see it. Once they made their whatever decisions they then are going to ask the smaller countries to give up their sovereignties and this and that but when the decisions are being made they can't even invite us.

RE: Haitian Invasion of the Dominican Republic
ladronaso and antonio, go to yahoo home page for the news of the day. it outlines the worst and best cars sold in the USA. chrysler has six of the 10 worst, and the writer opines that chrysler will probably be gone soon, anyway. Toyota and Honda occupy all 10 top spots. the opinion is that Chrysler cannot stand alone any longer, and, as you know, merger talks with GM fell through. the reason i am skeptical about a bailout for GM is that if the treasury bails them out, how can they say no to Ford and Chrysler?

RE: Haitian Invasion of the Dominican Republic
Yes i agree that it will be difficult for them to say "no" to the rest of them. I have subscription to consumerreports and have seen this trend year after year. The problem I have with Chrysler is that it is owned by a private equity group, so we would be bailing them out twice.

I believe that Honda was the only one that was profitable last year. But the picture is, it should not come with flimsy conditions. It should come with serious concessions requiring mfgs to pursue real alternative energy technology, and guaranteeing or insuring jobs stay locally in the U.S.

RE: Haitian Invasion of the Dominican Republic
exactly, ladronaso, Chrysler is owned by Cerberus Capital Management, which is a private equity firm. Cerberus does not want to be in the auto business; it wants to make money. if it could, it would liquidate assets tomorrow. the problem is that Daimler, its former partner, wrote down its equity from 19.9% last year to zero .it also leaked to the business world that Chrysler equity is worthless. so, following up on what Dominicanation suggests, what is to stop them from taking the money, divesting the assets, and investing in sugar cane? and, Dominicanation, i am delighted by your question regarding the G20 meeting. why not a United Nations style summit, where the concerns of small nations could be pondered also? that is why i said that there is nothing wrong, in my mind, with attending a summit of third world countries that Chavez would like to convene. somebody has to hear our side, too!!!

You forgot to mention, that you also have a house in lulu land, and that is from where you send your writing, I wonder what drugs are you under. I just feel sorry for all the Haitians in DR who do not agree with you and are the one to receive the DR fury.
Intoxicated you are! not understanding that after 9/11 comments like yours are taken seriously even coming from a manic like yourself, smart I must say, but so was Hitler and Rasputin.
Once they get you you'll wish water boarding could be the only method of turture.

Tupapaupa, conversation with you appears to be a pointless activity, because, even when you get it, you do not get it. Mr Lautaro might engage in anti haitian exchanges, but strives to keep the acoustics
No papacito, I DO GET IT.

What I don't get, for the life of me, is the constant bitching from you guys when posts are not written they way you want them to be written.

Who in hell died and made you guys The Moral Police?.

ANYBODY with a little "intellect" in them knows that a person's way of writting on the internet has NOTHING to do with their REAL LIFE "intellect".

Now get a grip and get off your high horse.

Btw: let me make it clear to you (or whomever), I am not going to allow you (or whomever) to fuck around with my freedom of speech right!. So get over it.

Just because he's passive and and chooses to take no action he thinks he's better and more educate than there of us... us, the realist, who can, based on history and current situation try to predict a future scenario of what might happened in DR in the next generation or so. We are the true patriots who seek to maintain our culture and value and are not so emotional to people who have done us wrong in the past. when DR become overrun with haitians to the point of balkanization I wonder what his stand would be ???

Haitians like Dominicanation still see DR as rightfully theirs... They dream of empire... and since we border them guess who the subjects are ??? they have try many times before to take it and turn us into 2nd class citizen... they reason they havent' is because they can't but if they could... THEY WOULD...

P.S. DREADLOCKS IS A MORALIST-PUSSY

DR Is right fully mine you little prick! and I will get it sooner or later. I'm going to take your country from you like the Jews took the US from the Americans......This is a new century baby and we are coming out. I don't need guns, I don't need an Army. Just business so don't take it personal. You know what they say when the Cat is away the mice come out to play and believe me I['m playing on both sides.

hey, Carlos, you claim that we 'lost", because we tried to elevate the level of the discourse. au contraire, Carlos. you are the guy who refused to try and learn something worthwhile, wasting your life insulting Haitians. so, at the end of the day, you remain an ignorant know-nothing, and we do not. so, who lost? as to being a moralist; hmmm.. lets see. because i try to elicit a semblance of civility from a poster makes me a moralist? do you understand the meaning of the word? then again, there is no discredit to being a moralist. it is surely more acceptable in a modern , urbane society, than acting like some ill bred, pre-agricultural antecedent of the human race. this proclivity to swearwords might be some misguided attempt at machismo; if it is, you should seek therapy. nobody , at least no worthwhile person, is impressed by verbal thuggery; actually, we pity your deficiency of vocabulary.

You've lost because you can't stop it... You've lost because you can't stop me... You are quick at judging me, when all I seek is the betterment of my country and people but then you fail to condemned Dominicannation when he insults our country, our people. So excuse me but all the evidence point to the fact... and that is that you are a soft-moralist-pussy...

PS how's my spelling???
