THE CEMIES

All of the spirits of Caney spirituality are identified under the term "CEMI" which is the Taino word for "spirit"

I love this this is great. If I can also and on to this the Cemies are also acted upon as ancestors or an ancestral intelligence. They are like having guardian angels or interpreted as the signs of the zodiac. The coa on the other hand is well connected to the serpent power or rather the cacique power, in some form that kind of had a relationship with the kings of Ancient Egypt to use it as an example. Even Coabay has a connection with other world myths. It was the first place were the god of death and ruler of the underworld was associated with. This can be compared with the traditions of the Mayans and also the traditions of the Ancient Egyptians. Now the point being here is this; when you take a very close look at the Taino tradition you will see the very close resemblances they have with other ancient cultures, and this is broken down by 1. studying the art 2. the myths 3. the various correspondences they had with each other.

Many scholars believe there are similarities with Egyptian and Mayan prophecy but I was not aware of the Taino.

Yes they are all connected, allow me to explain: for starters in their art you always see a circle and a dot in the center which can be a hieroglyphic symbol for the sun such as the sol of Jayuya. This can also be interpreted as the solar plexus chakra, while taking a very close look at the art you can see in fine detail how they displayed parts of the spine, the back and the brain. Even the shamanistic positions they sit in breathing has many correspondences with many chinese tai chi/chi gung and kundalini yoga. So with this I am saying here is there is much more that we can learn from studying the art. We already have so much from the text by various historians, but I am a firm believer knowing the art they left behind for us can fill in the gaps in restoring not just the SPRITUAL HIGH of the Antilles, but regenerating the cosmogony of the Taino cosmos. Also there are Cemies that were found in the Yucatan penninsula, and I have a very rare photo of one coming from the private collection of the late Alexander Von wuthenau. Stevens-Arroyo makes note of this in his book the Cave of the Jagua and I think also Irving Rouse, but I have to check and make sure. This info you can find again in Art and Mythology of the Taino Indians.

ProfessorCemi,

I have to admit this is interesting and compelling material, except for the "arts" part, because you can pretty much connect any constellation of stars to point anywhere and achieve probably every design imaginable.

I hope you take into consideration that many ancient civilizations have been known to make "drawings" of the night sky. There are huge hieroglyphs and geoglyphs drawings in Egypt, Malta, United States (Mississippi and California), Chile, Bolivia and in other countries. You also have the Nasca lines in Peru, which were built nearly two thousand years ago.

I believe this is part of the reason why so many scholars believe these civilizations were connected. I hope you also understand that mathematics is the universal language of the universe and by the same token the arts are the universal language of humanity.

I hope you understand I am not trying to discredit you in any way, shape, manner, or form. It's only talking, when all is said and done, regardless of your particular spiritual or religious background, for most of us it is undeniable common sense that somehow, in some way, everything is connected with everything else - that there is a powerful source in the Universe from which everything flows.

Not a problem friend, were here to build on Taino ancestry and its sacredness. In many ways it helps us to expand and share what we all know.

Let's get back to our roots, Quisqueya!

Guaraguao, Cuyaya, Cigua, Guanabana, Mapuey, Chichigua, Manati, Barbacoa, Canoa, Huracan,
Casabe, Hamaca, etc. Let's concentrate and build on those common use words that persist in our native language in spite of all the changes that unfolded (some good, most devastating) in A.D. 1492.

Share you knowledge of the language of our forefathers if you can remember any words....

Yum: You're totally right about the Orinoco Basin, B.

BTW: Guagua is a little boy in Peru...

The sacred Taino site called Los Charcos de Los Indios

By Ken_Mayer

An immense sacred Taino totem located in the central region of the Dominican Republic, the 100-foot-high face of Los Charcos is carved into a rock wall above a waterfall, its round mouth formed by the opening to a cave.

Here's another way to do it :

1) Right click with your mouse on the image you want to insert

2) On the menu that pops up, scroll all the way to the bottom and select "Properties"

3) Under the "Properties" menu you will see "Location:" or "Address" followed by a url of the image, COPY THIS URL!

4) After doing that, when you're ready to post the pics here on DT select the icon that looks like this:

NOTE: You might get a yellow bar pop-up blocking this, so if that happens click on the yellow bar where it says "click here to allow....." and then select the option that says "Temporarily Allow Pop-Ups from this site" or "Temporarity Allow Scripted Windows"

5) After clicking on this button Paste the url of your image (that you copied under the "Properties" menu) where it says "Enter the url of your image here..."

And voila! That's how to do it, I really hope that this helps you!

RE: Taino Ancestry Among Dominicans
Now here is something that I want to go a little deeper in detail. The image you see here from one of the ball courts you see an image of a Cemi or one of our great ancestors (see next thread), here I want you to pay attenttion closely to the symbol our ancestor has on his stomach. It's a basic circle and dot, a simple metaphor for the solar plexus. In terms of the zodiac also the symbols almost seems to represent a internal pool of immense magnitude. What was the initial meaning behind this? And was this a form of writing for them? They used alot of natural images to express their daily livelihood, so when I first started learning and reading up on our culture every where I saw the circle and dot wherever I saw Taino art. I even saw one that looks like the brain [I'll try to see if I can post that up]. Any thoughts?
