There may be a market in the US tourists to the DR for healthy eco-vacations , 1- 3 months, taking exercise and eating healthy local food. Slimming down. Walks on the beach, gentle gym, swimming, medical checks etc. etc. Perhaps off - season.

I don't think so.

1) There is a dire shortage of places to walk, cycle or run safely in this country, especially at night. That's why the locals don't do it. The small small proportion that are interested in fitness go to a gym.

2) Dominican beaches are okay for paddling and splashing but not serious swimming. Sharp dead-coral reefs, stinging sea-urchins, broken-glass, other rubbish and staphylococci too common. Ever seen Dominicans swimming properly?

3) Dominican cuisine is generally very high in salt, saturated fats, sugar, carbohydrates and calories, and is over-cooked (low in vitamins), over-processed (pealed, chopped, crushed) thereby low in fiber and roughage.

4) The prevalence of over-weight, obese, drunk, inactive and lazy locals does not inspire effort and self-discipline. Dominicans will take a motorbike or concho to go two blocks rather than walk. Riding a push-bike is seen as an indication of extreme poverty. Most hard physical jobs (building industry and agriculture) are done by Haitians.

No: I walk 1 -3 miles every day along the beach. More is possible. Cycling is also good for miles.

A serious swimmer friend of mine swims 2 miles nearly every day. There is much calm and good water in which to swim.

No-one has to eat DR cusine at a health resort.

Many locals play sports and aspire to be picked for internationally competing teams.
