I'm curious if anybody has used the metro recently. Is it working? Is it being maintained properly? Are a lot of people using it? Edited on 8/18/2009 10:55 AM by Chico81. |

DominicanChic informs us that it is very rare for children in Latin America to die of poverty. i stand corrected. i always thought that people in places like the favelas of Brazil and numerous other slums in Latin America were dying from the effects of poverty. but then again, what do i know? |

Not pretty, but decent, at least the ones that i saw. Most already have electricity (albeit illegally) and many of basic necessities needed to survive. I didn't see anyone on the verge of starving to death. Lots of smiling faces... which doesn't mean they're not going through hard times but it could indeed be worse (ie. cite soleil). I do believe it's rare for someone to die of hunger in Brazil, call me crazy, it may not be the richest of countries but it's no somalia. Edited on 8/18/2009 4:38 PM by joblitsky. |

Wow, this thread keeps "derailing" itself, pun intended "Dennon129": Please learn to punctuate, how to spell words properly, how to get your message across so people can actually understand what you are trying to convey, because even I'm having a hard time understanding all your gibberish. Your posts are too cluttered. I am not attacking your message, I am simply calling out what I see as simple errors and prose (or lack thereof). Now, let me mention one thing about the DR: there isn't a lack of money, it's a lack of political will to tackle the distribution of the monies, because in taxes and fees alone, the Government racks up billions of DOLLARS a year. Everyone wants a piece of the pie because they were promised JOB$$$ if they gave the PLD or whatever "the flavor of the month" party is at the moment, their support during elections. Granted, the DR is like a giant washing machine, where drug monies are laundered to build all those fandangled new "skyscrapers" because it's really easy to hide money in "Expenditures" when you have a building that won't meet your construction schedule and all sorts of intangibles like nuts and bolts and "varilla pal' edificio" have to be bought at a higher price than yesterday and aren't even worth an eyeful or evaluation, but ever since Leonel's first term, those trade agreements and access to international markets and sources of financing have made it easier for legitimate businesses to invest in projects like the Hazoury clan did with Cap Cana or the Bancalari family did with their projects in Samana or the Ferreteria Americana people and their "Galerias 360" project. Those are just examples, but I digress. The topic is the Santo Domingo Subway or Metro, however you prefer to call it. I would love to see the entire Capital with Metro lines in order to eliminate those damn "sindicatos", but not at the expense of education, health, housing or other necessities which are guaranteed by the Constitution to all Dominican citizens. Leonel can fool people with his "demagogia a losh hermanosh del Partido de la Liberashion Dominicana" and his voters, but he can't fool me. He can't even try, lol...to paraphrase him, "he doesn't have the intellectual capacity to debate me" on the so-called merits of his Government. Those were his words to Miguel Vargas Maldonado last year before the elections came. But that's neither here nor there, the point is, he should put roofs on those schools and assure access to hospitals and medicine before tackling his pet projects. That doesn't mean that I don't support more Metro lines, which I do support and they would help rid the city of the damn "conchos" which I hated riding when I lived there, but I did it anyways...... |

I WANT YOU TO STOP AND THINK FOR A MINUTE, THINK OF ALL THE MONEY THAT WENT ON THE METRO, AND THE TUNNELS AND THE PAY TOLLS ON MAJOR ROADS THE NEW RESORTS THAT THE GOV MAKES MONEY OFF OF, AND IMAGEN ALL THAT MONEY GOING TO BETTER EDUCATION BETTER SCHOOLS YOU WANT TO KNOW HOW FAST THAT COUNTRY GETS OUT OF THAT WHOLE ITS BEEN IN FOR SO MANY YEARS? |
