The attempt at socializing some sectors of society is to even the playing field between those privileged or industrious enough to afford better services to those of lesser means. If the free market settles at a price where the average person cannot afford the goods that are necessary in life, ie healthcare, food and energy, then government must impose measures to ensure prices remain low.

Yes the US system is geared towards SATS scores and just as with intensive tuition you can train almost everyone to do circus tricks the tricks taught at great expense in US private schools and Universities get exposed i n real life for what they are - tricks without creativity or deep thinking.

French and German rail systems are way superior to AMTRAK - politicians in the pay of oil and motor companies in the US have seldom wanted Amtrak to succeed - it would cut back profits at oil and the highly subsidized and bailed out US motor companies. Just as the motor companies nominees took over tram companies in the 30,s then proceeded to tear up the tracks so people had to buy motor vehicles now many politicians do not want an efficient passenger rail network to match those in China, Europe, Japan etc. Of course they laugh in the middle of the latest heatwave at any possibility of global warming due to man made effects and the finance huge profitable hospitals through the private sector to treat the millions of children and adults affected by asthma and other pollution related diseases. US health care consumes 18% of GNP already - much directed at ,curing, preventable disease, motor accidents etc. It is corruption wrtten LARGE.
