Hard to see the state of Israel as one with roots in the enlightenment given their vaguely stated commitment to a state religion. So on that count I'd say the professor's criticism may be moot. I agree with him in principle that collective punishment is not legitimate. I'm not so sure Israel is engaging in collective punishment here though, it's a very sticky situation.


Funny thing we can say similar things about DR as well as regards enlightenment roots. A state religion, even if just nominal, is really against enlightenment ideals. Perhaps DR (and Latin America at large?) has stronger roots in romanticism.

I cant see how the no border idea would work, but I am surprised that a professor rom Brooklyn College would say that, given the huge number of hasidic Jews who attend the school.

It may be morally outrageous, but they can do what they want, where and when they want, and with whom they want because they have the almighty United States backing them. American Jews are an extremely powerful group to the extent that not even Obama can criticize their actions.

I would like to take this opportunity to tell everyone on DT (and all Dominicans in the United States) to start thinking a little more seriously about the Haitian issue in DR. The reasons why Jews and Palestinians are at it all the time is because they both claim land as theirs in part due to the fact that their ancestors have been there for thousands of years. It would be very sad to see the eastern part of Hispaniola in this same situation because of the pressure of NGO's and foreign governments. During the past decade, the Haitian population (both immigrants and their descendants) has increased at an alarming rate thanks to these parties, all the while Dominicans are forced to emigrate to try and find a better life.

Mass immigration after World War II is confirmed by historians to have been a factor in populating Israel with Jews, and what today is helping them in their anti-Palestinian crusade. It is imperative that Dominicans that have the ability to pressure US government officials do so to stop these NGO's and foreign governments from implementing their malicious agenda.

Regrettably, my friends, she's right. The current situation with the haitian inmigrants have all the potential to become an ethnic disaster on the forseeable future if things keep up like this. The haitian population might be living with their head lowered on the present to avoid trouble, but who can guarantee that they'll remain so tomorrow, when the advantage of numbers might be on their side? a fact that is not so outlandish as it sounds when we take into account that they're the nation with the fastest growth rate on the entire continent (4.5 children per family) and the fact that, notwithstanding their hardships, they tend to live more and better on our country than in their own land.

One doesn't need to be a rocket scientist to realize the fact that, if the haitian inmigrant population fails to get their rights pacifically (as they're currently struggling to do), they'll do as every downtrodden minority on Latin America does when all pacific doors are closed to them: they'd resort to the armed struggle, read, form a guerrilla group as in the case of Colombia or Peru, and, as it happens with all these movements, the people who will suffer the most is the civilian people, no matter their extraction, which will find themselves in the middle of the crossfire.
