The Dominican Baseball League site has a story today about those who are playing; it uses the term "on the payroll" to define the participants like A-Rod, Ortiz, Pujols and others.

Rickey will get in on 99-point-something percent of the vote and then speak about himself in the third person at the induction.

Jim Rice does not belong in the Hall of Fame . No way. One of the worst clutch players in Sox history. From the 7th inning on RISP

Steroids or no steroids, McGwire wasn't good enough to be in the Hall of Fame.
McGwire was never considered one of the top 10 players in the game in his prime. He couldn't run, couldn't field. He basically struck out or homered..... remember that Dave Kingman was the same type of player and he's not in the Hall of Fame.

Did Sammy Sosa make some mistakes? Yes, he disgraced himself before Congress by "forgetting" how to speak English . Using a corked bat...... The fans seem to forget that when Sosa returned after his cork suspension in 2003 he went on a tear and was a major reason that team even made the playoffs. You can get into the steroid debate, and I'm not going to sit here and proclaim that Sammy is completely innocent, but as of now, nothing has been turned up to suggest that he used anything illegal. In my opinion, Sammy Sosa is a Hall of Famer. Sosa returned in 2007 and hit 21 HR and drove in 92 runs in just over 400 ABs. Had the Rangers not cut his playing time in favor of youth over the final two months, Sosa likely would've hit 30 HR and driven in well over 100 -- this coming in a league now with stringent steroid testing.

yummy you are smoking dope ..sporting news picked him 84 of 100 greatest of all time his stats are profoundly better than Kingmans and he won a gold glove ....he hit 140 more homers than Kingman and his avg was 30 points better and more than 200 RBI more....Sammy aint going either { In 1999, the The Sporting News released a list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players. The list had been compiled during the 1998 season and included statistics through the 1997 season. McGwire was ranked at Number 91. That year, he was elected to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team In 2005, The Sporting News published an update of their list and McGwire had been moved up to Number 84.

However, in the 2007 and 2008 balloting for the Baseball Hall of Fame, McGwire failed to attain election, receiving 128 of the 545 cast, 23.5% of the vote. He received the same exact amount of votes both years. It is widely conceded that this was related to the steroid scandal and McGwire's less than forthcoming testimony.....the same thing will happen to Corky ...NO HALL OF FAME for Corky

RE: DR government paying MLB stars to play in World Classic
from todays NYT ..McGwire was turned down again although he is eighth all-time with 583 home runs. Normally, that would be enough to get anybody elected to the Hall, but times have not been normal since players’ shoulders began merging with their enlarged craniums back in the mid-‘90’s.

Since retiring after the 2001 season, McGwire has become the canary in the coal mine for Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Roger Clemens, all of whom become eligible in 2013.

Come to think of it, Bonds and Sosa would be wise to find a team that needs an immobile and aged designated hitter, to postpone their day of reckoning with the hangin’ jury of baseball writers who are the Hall voters. .....the hangin jury awaits Corky

Many diehards will hang onto the memories of Babe Ruth, Cy Young, Hank
Aaron and Willie Mays, but a close look at the records will erase all doubt
that Bonds is the best ever........He has won the NLMVP seven times, four times more than the next closest player. He became the second man to enter in the 40/40 club (forty home runs and forty stolen bases.) Undeniably, he has the best eye of any player ever (he holds the top three single season walks records). I could go on about his accomplishments, but because of the controversy, no one would listen. Before he started making baseballs land in McCovey Cove by the hundreds, he could have been considered one of the best ballplayers of all time. Now, it is impossible to imagine him as anything other than one of the very few elite. No one can argue that.

Simply put, Barry Bonds is the best ballplayer that most of us will ever see.
