I'm counting on Puerto Rico to continue bringing home those belts, especially around the welterweights. Miguel Cotto is out there and a threat to all at 147, and he already has a win over the putative champ Mosley. Luis Collazo has been doing his thing despite shameful judging against his style and I expect he will continue to surprise. Others are coming up as well...they certainly are the class of Antillean and Caribbean fighting history, we Dominicans can stake little against that claim! |

Speaking of Cotto what's your take on all the hoopla surrounding a possible illegal substance in Margarito's glove that night? The maragarito that fought Cotto sure didn't look the margarito that fought Mosley, that's for damn sure. "Don't ask me who's influenced me. Leonard ate him in his prime, though. Ray Leonard beat Duran in their second and third match-ups but their first fight in Montreal Canada (props to GC) was an epic battle. Leonard made Duran fight the rematch almost immediately considering Duran's penchant for wine, women and song after his victory so that Duran would not have ample time to get back into fighting shape after his indulgences. The strategy worked, as a flabby out of shape Duran introduced the words "no mas" into the boxing lexicon vernacular. Remember, that a well past his prime Duran won 2 World Championships, by defeating Davey Moore and Iran Barkley, two excellent fighters, in their prime. |

I'm going to have to get my hands on it. Valid points on Duran devin. "Don't ask me who's influenced me. For some reason Leonard felt he could take Duran going toe to toe with him..... didnt he see his nickname?? 'MAnos de Piedra'!!!! It wasnt a great fight, but I did repsenct Leonard more after that ... since he had th guts to take him on.. then in lvD 2, leonard was on his gaem... showboating etc... Duran is a fighter .. he didnt come to dacne and got frustrated.!! Leonard was also luck wihbt Hearns.. if the boxing commisision had reduced teh rounds to 12 by then , he would of lost.... but agian, leonard proved to have a heart of champion !! Did Tito ever fight Duran? |

Did Tito ever fight Duran? Glimm, Do you believe that Leonard vs. Duran I, was not a good fight? This was an epic slugfest with Leonard abandoning his trademark fighting style to go toe to toe with Duran. Duran's unanimous decision speaks to the closeness of the fight, winning with scores of 145-144, 148-147 and 146-144. A must see classic battle that had many sub-plots and great action. P.S., Trinidad never fought Duran. Edited on 2/6/2009 6:31 PM by devin11. |

Devin: I said that the first one was the fight to see..... it was better than good.... what I said was that it wasnt GREAT ... see , i would have wanted Duran to knock leonard out.... that would have been GREAT !!! A slugfest was Duran's fight..... the concern was if Duran would be able to catch Leonard, would he be able to hurt him enough to win the fight... but Leonard went toe to toe wiht a slugger.. tilting all odds to Duran ... thus, I also said, I respected LEonard after that fight......I thik Leonard wanted to prove something to himself and he did that night..... Duran was liek an energizer bunny.//// he kept on going and going..... even way after his prime , he was still a force to be dealt with...... one of the all time greats! |

Let's remember there can be a difference between a great FIGHT and a great BOXING MATCH. That's one thing I love about the sport, you're never absolutely sure which you'll get when you put two elite guys in there. Margarito ... well I'm trying to wait on the commission to pass judgment. Unfortunately a lot of ppl have doubts about that Cali commission. I hope this was just Hopkin's old cornerman using the mind tricks he learned in that camp in Shane's favor, but we'll have to wait and see. |
