RE: Dominicans and Haitians
Well, it because of several reasons...Many Dominicans, as well as Haitians always want to live in the past and like to include politics in their relations. They want to complain about events that happened hundreds of years ago and talk about political issues. Instead of focusing on those things, they should rather talk about the same music they like, the sports they play, the food they eat, and the same dance they have. As far as for me, I'm not a Haitian politician, so its okay for me to like Dominicans.

RE: Dominicans and Haitians
From my POV, the reason behind the animosity between both nations right now is all connected with the politicians agenda of finding an "useful" scapegoat to which they could lead the people to blame for all the troubles that have plagued the DR since the fall of Trujillo's regime (unemployment, blackouts, high costs of living and the like). A hatred that, if the "haitian card" were to be out of the equation, would be directed against them.

RE: Dominicans and Haitians
It has a lot to do about history. This happens in the entire world, people fighting over stuff that happened many years ago, when today's people didn't even live in that crisis, yet they fight over it as If it was yesterday.

Also, anytime a less developed neighbour country has a lot of inmigrants to a more developed country you will find this kind of issues. I think it has more to do of the Dominicans being affraid of the large quantity of haitians than anything else. Like if they're stealing something that belongs to them. The fact that haitians speak a different language, have very different habits and mostly they don't integrate with the cultural practices of the DR is another aggravating factor.

RE: Dominicans and Haitians
When ever there’s has been large ethic migrations they are usually followed by xenophobia, racism and classism of the native populace. That’s just human nature, we haven’t evolved past biases and discriminations, Haiti’s and the DR history deeply complicates this social dynamic and makes the Haitians horrible conditions even worse; Dominicans wont take pity on their historical rival some might even kick(Haitians) him when he is down and have no mercy for their plight.

If Haitians would have a stable economy and enough work for its people, there wouldn’t be any immigration of Haitians into the DR and therefore nobody would give the issue a second thought. It is this ethnic migration that creates the rejection, I think that history has little to do with it.

RE: Dominicans and Haitians
Because Dominicans are not taught that there has been time in history when Dominicans have maltreated our brother Haitians. That a Merenguero can sing a song making a mockery of a black person and make fun of how the Haitians talk and its natural black color.
Just remember every time you laugh because someone calls a Haitian "negrito" in a joke or you hear it in a Merengue or a Bachata or the radio. You are being racist. You are laughing at its nature.
Saying "Dios Perdoname" doesn't fix it.

Because if Dominicans go to another country to make some money, when Dominicans make it back to their land they want to show that they did good and they show it off. And they want to clean the yard so they pay the illegal Haitian. If they want to build they are going to pay less by paying some illegal Haitians to do the hard labor.

But if Dominicans talk about the issue they want to say that they have Haitian friends and that they were just kidding around. Then some Dominicans say Haitians are taking their jobs.

Go and do it then. Do the things Haitians do in order to live then you can say what ever you want.

But no. You can tell me how bad you are doing, you show me all your kids, but you are sitting with me, drinking a beer. I can see Saturday afternoon you are wearing a nice shirt and a nice pair of jeans.

JCjua. Dominicans live there lives. There can be numerous problems going on but the majority will still try to find a way to have a smile on their face. Living in DR is rough, you can still try to enjoy life, it's that getting a cevercita at the colmado so be it.

RE: Dominicans and Haitians
I think Lautaro summed up an aspect of why the animosity exists between both peoples extremely well, but I feel that their is a historical aspect that has to be addressed in order to move on to the next level. Haitians need to come to terms with the horrible atrocities that the fathers of their country visited upon the dominican people. Likewise, Dominicans need to accept responsibility for what occured in 1937. The Dominican people were complicit in their silence for I have heard numerous first hand tails of being forced to turn away while guards did their dirty deed and not speak of what occured again until old age set in. The only thing I can say in those people's defense is that they were as terrified as anyone of state repression.
Here in the states, where new yorkers of haitian and dominican descent share the common popular culture, we get along. Most of the time when I first meet a haitian-american and we learn of where we're originally from we usually both say "we're from the same island!" and share a good laugh (I swear this has happened dozens of times!) Obviously when there is common ground between us there isn't that animosity. In my opnion we need to get a few historical animosities out of the way as at least one step toward mutual understanding between both peoples on a national level.

Familiarity breeds contempt. For example see how the Irish love the English
What if truth is a woman? What if truth is a Dominican woman!?
