A Few Days ago I asked a simple question about the possibility getting an LCD TV
through customs in Santiago. Let me be more specific, I will pack it in its original foam packing in an oversize hard suitcase. The TV should be well protected and under the max. weight. One reply stated that it could get damaged, I will take that chance. So my other question is about duties. This TV costs about twice as it would in the DR. So, I will have a receipt for about $500. Yes, this is the actual cost and less than half the cost of the same TV in a store, say like CECOMSA . How much would I expect to pay in duties if they do not allow this item through?? On the other hand, I could reduce the size of the TV to a computer monitor size, and may bring a computer with me. Since I know only rudimentary Spanish, and the Spanish keyboard is a handicap, should I expect they let me through because the computer will be necessary to conduct my personal business ?? Thanks, I am anxious to return to my 2nd home in Santiago cuz things are bad here in the US, and getting worse.

RE: A Few Days ago I asked a simple question about the possibility getting an LCD TV
Generally on large items total charge for electrical luxury goods is about 70% 30% tax, 18% IBIS 10% customs clearance charge plus they load the invoice price a little.
It is possible to buy a computer monitor and separate tv converter through Amazon and have it shipped through CPS. If the monitor price is less than 200 dollars you should escape tax - only IBIS. Theoretically you should have other paperwork for an individual import and it should be of a type inspected by the DR authorities. One laptop is often tax free as they assume it is a personal possession if it is obviously in use. However if you take it back to the states be careful to back everything up. Customs there sometimes scramble the hard disk contents,

Fortunately I've never been charged for my new laptop and camera's each time I've arrived to the DR. But, from what I've heard, it depends on who is going to check you and the mood he's in. You might not even get checked and pay nothing, or you could en up paying full duties (which is 18 itbis plus the duties specific for the tv).

I suggest that you look for the specific tax percentage for the item in this page and print it just in case they want to over-tax you (it's supposed to be 30% + 18% Itbis): http://www.dga.gov.do/dgagov.net/portal/format/defaultFormatUno.aspx?TabId=158
