Anyone interested in starting our own? I have 2-300. anyone in? Starting our own what? Portal, site, etc. watering hole, water cooler...... Too time consuming. This site has a decent layout and has been out for some time and only now am I beginning to see a wider variety of posters (unfortunately we lost some good ones along the way. Jabao, james, and Frank where the hell are you guys?) Solo una broma. I am a "new kid in the block" but does anybody knows who are the people running this place (mods)?. Do they post?. Or is it a secret?. It goes without saying all sites owners and mods like to play the "favoritism game" and that was more than evident on the previously mentioned thread. Only those taking this site too seriously can't be objective. At least now they know some of us are noticing it. I am "An Army Of One" ![]() Come Get Some!!. |

I mean a warning in advance and maybe an explanation would be nice.... but to do it without notification kind of defeats the purpopse of a forum, .. I know they can say the reserve the right to do so, but then why have a forum>? Also, I noticed that some posts say 'edited by" and its the same poster... do you guys edit your own posts? |

Quote: Manhattanite previously said: The editors know best what their traffic looks like, they have the stats. It isn't farfetched to guess maybe traffic has decreased lately. The same opinions & snide comments are rehashed endlessly by four or five members, and perhaps casual/lurking visitors have lost interest. Commentary is nice to read when there are 10-25 comments, even including the gags and provocative statements. But few people besides the combatants are going to care for repetitious 100+ comment discussions, especially when past the the first couple dozen they degenerate into the same stupid left vs right or DR vs Haiti battles. It'd be no problem to just leave them to their deices but maybe these have gotten so cliche and insulting that casual readers are turned off and don't return. The other answer may be that those threads are simply too much of a burden on the servers, either because the combatants are checking in too often or because the technology can't handle that many entries in a stable manner. Anyway only the editors know, so unless they make a statement for us we remain in the dark... Manhattan: I really don't know what threads Cibaeño is referring to. However, regarding you comments, I'd like to qualify a few of the points you've made above. If you notice many people are turned off by the blatant "monopoly" some have taken upon themselves as if they were the conscience of the nation's people. Some of these aren't even from DR; they just "feel" entitled to opine and have a personal conviction to dictate what's wrong or right when it comes to the current events of DR and its citizens. Some people have common sense and just elect to allow the usual belligerent interlopers free rein of what they assume to be their domain. Que se lo cojan to', entoces! Cibaeño: You and I, along with other DR have a right to expresss ourselves without reservation over the objection of any non-DR interested parties. I personally think what these agitators want to do is stiffle our discussions, and sow seeds of strife amongst "our" people. They may come and go; yet, when the push comes to shove who are the Dominicans? Nosotros! Another thing I've observed is that some of the articles that are featured are done so as if to cause disharmony, and bickering. It seems that some of the articles are incendiary in nature. Why would you routinely cover a neighboring country's goings-on "for sport"? Knowing the continuing struggle with immigration, and the scarcity of jobs in DR? If a disaster were to take place in Haiti, per se, It's prudent to cover it. Bu, to constantly display stories about Haitian isuues in DT; a DR venue is ill-advised ( uncalled for), and frankly asking for turmoil. In case DT doesn't know it, Dominicans are not to blame for Haitians being disenfranchised; Most don't own Sugar Cane fields, Ingenios, or costruction sites. They are victims just like them! They are trying to make a living in a hard world, in a country with few opportunities which are dwindling quickly. So, I think that some of the topics covered here add fuel to the fire, instead of providing impartial news from a journalistic perspective. What do you say Manhattanite? What do you think Cibaeño? Arsenio: I do agree the editors may want to exercise more judgment in posting any articles about Haiti. It is a sad fact, but the few people on the site who care for such articles only care out of anti-Haitian sentiment. You don't have to scratch too far underneath the surface to find similar tales of poverty and disaster in DR, maybe it is better to stick to those. I also agree with Arsenio since he first started bringing this up that non-Dominicans on the forum should have the courtesy to at least not be disruptive of those conversations where the issue is clearly our own Dominican 'dirty laundry'. It's not that these posters aren't welcome, I'm sure they have their own reasons for interest in DR and Dominicans... but especially if your opinions are just rehashed US political talking points, or racial characterizations or stereotypes about our identity it would be better if you just sat out. That is just my opinion though. This really depends on what direction it is the site wants to go in. Is this meant to be a paper to inform English-speaking American/European expatriates in DR? Is it aimed at diasporans abroad in the US? Or native DOminicans simply looking to practice English? There will of course be overlap, but it would be wise if the management decides which audience they want to cultivate more. trinitario and others I'm not sure the examples I have seen really involved censorship of gov criticism. If that were the case Mr. josean would have been long ago booted! To the editor/moderator's credit the locked threads I saw were all ones where discussions had gone past dialogue into becoming virulent, nasty racial and political comments. The editors have no incentive to allow these types of convos to drain their bandwidth. The editors also have to bear in mind what potential advertisers might think if they came across this tripe. So overall I think a lot of us would like some input from the people behind the scenes. We know you are reading Edited on 2/19/2009 4:24 PM by Manhattanite. |

Location: United States, DR Join date: August 2008 Member #: 1291 Posts: 8401 | RE: What's up with DT? I was surprised to see that some topics are being locked. When inquired I was told that DT doesn't have the necessary manpower to monitor all the slander and the foul words posted by some in some threads, specially regarding to Haiti. I guess too much activity can also overload the system as it did once with a thread about Haitian's being deported in Santiago that was going to 400 posts and then it blew up. Free internet newspapers such as DT offers good news information for their readers. They can also provide much useful information, I for one have learned a lot from other posters and made some faceless friends. I have probably bothered or insulted other individuals in the heat of the exchange. Mostly it has been informative and entertaining and after a hard day trying to bring the bacon home it relaxes me and many times provides me with a hardy laugh. DT is doing what they can to offer this service to their loyal readers, but readers also carry a responsibility to DT that some are not following. I guess we are not following "the rules". Maybe this has something to do with it also and Manhattanite made a comment about some posters were actually turning off present or prospective advertisers because of the foul language and uncensored commentaries. There are few public medias that you can post your comment without it first going through a filter so that the editors can sort of take out the filth and garbage first. This of course is censorship. But also DT has to protect themselves and the bottom line which is to attract advertisers that pay the bills. But this takes additional manpower and expense and cost money, a commodity that we all are trying to save nowadays. In some countries with more advanced legal systems like the US, the cyber media can be sued for slander. See article posted by texasshoe in the forum.
