and Gizmo, you attacked me with unexpected vitriol , simply for suggesting that the DR look toward import substitution, and reduce its dependency on foreign inputs. that, my friend, is an expression of concern, not a put down. in case you are unaware, the current account deficit is expanding exponentially every year. that is caused by excessive foreign currency outflow. do you believe that Papa John just allows you to use their name and ingredients because you write them a polite letter of request? do you believe that the orientals would be where they are if they simply allowed everybody else to set up shop in their country, displacing local entrepreneurs by strength of cash? how many chinese heads do you count when you go into McDonalds in the USA? i know, you can get Big Macs and starbucks in Beijing, but the USA owes chinese sovereign wealth funds over a trillion dollars, not the other way around. so, before you allow some personal dispositions to cloud your judgement, inclining you to attack people, understand the gravamen and intent of the post. if you find self reliance offensive, you cause me to wonder.

Gizmo How can you compare a country the size of China with a small country like D.R., that comparison is ridiculous at best. Another thing i wasn't making a big issue about Papa John, wether D.R. has 100 Papa John restaurants or not it don't matter at the end of the day. Simply anywhere these fast food joints open they create jobs. The thing you got to ask, are the local pizza brands are they any different? the salaries for the workers are they any different? You see Dreadlocks i don't see so much the brand name i look at who owns the franchises, if you own a franchise you can make a decent living. The workers most likely are paid a low wage, it happens in the U.S. it happens in any destination these restaurants open. The question we all have to ask is how can small country's compete with larger country's with more ample resources. And as you know, when it comes to the amounts of resources it don't really matter. You see country's like Argentina, Mexico etc with valuable resources yet the majority of it's inhabitants are poor with no chances of making it in life. In short theres disparities due to the histories of these country's, you got to take in account that fact also.

Manhattanite, you are correct in upbraiding me for my exuberant disagreement of certain initiatives. i am just passionate about certain issues, and, i guess i am not good at camouflaging my passions on these issues. as i said before, self sufficiency is one issue which i stress above most things. i believe in doing for one's self, and not have others always doing for you, that way, you maintain a greater degree of control over your outcomes. maybe not complete, because there are so many external variables, but more than if you put your future in the hands of others.

Having been on both sides of this argument for the sake of argument you guys Dread, Vacanos and Gizmo should look for some common ground you all have valid points in various shades of grey as opposed to black and white and you probably have more in common than you can imagine

About the argument about white Dominicans not living in NY......

It doesn't take a magician to know that in the DR the mayority of whites are well better off than blacks (or mezclao).

Because the mayotiry are better off, they don't have the need to migrate/move/relocate to the US.

Because of that reason, the mayority of Dominicans in the US are either black or mixed.

Because of that reason is that so many Puerto Ricans, Mexicans or any Latino think they are seeing a ghost when they see a white Dominican. They are used to seeing the mayority, not the minority.

That said, not all whites in the DR are well off and those are the ones relocating to the US.

Yes, the campos in the DR are llenos of beautiful women and people with blue/green eyes and blond hair but it goes without saying that some of them are as dumb as a kitchen sink!.

Most of those are the ones who relocate to the US.

well, i have lived to see the day when Tupapaupa actually helps my cause. actually, his posting is exactly what i am saying. furthermore, the same phenomenon extends to just about any pigmentocracy. very few really white dominicans emigrate to the USA. they are generally better positioned financially to enjoy a comfortable life here, so why go to the USA, or Europe, to shovel snow and live in an inhospitable environment? this is a cruel question, and please forgive me for asking it, but here it is: how many blond haired, blue eyed dominicans buy a ticket on a yola?
