Who gave it all for his cause of absolute independence. Pedro Santana won it in the field Duarte in the heart and consciences of all Dominicans. As Duarte stated liberatad o muerte. He made it clear to Santana even with the frequent Haitian invasion LIBERTAD O MUERTE. Duarte was an uncompromised independentista who gave it all for his country and for that he will allways be in our heart. For 22 years the military dictatorship of Jean Pierre Boyer supplanted the Spanish and Criollo domain over there lands and property, he tried to erase everything hispanic that categorized us as a people, while even attempting to forbid us from speaking spanish in public places. The amazing thing is how our independence struggle began, Juan Pablo Duarte founded a secret society named "Los Trinitarios" a movement for the soul purpose of liberating the country from Haiti and any foreign power. Another extension of the named group was called "La Filantropica". This group will carry out plays secretely and will act out stories promoting liberation and self determination and independence to inspire separation from Haiti's abusive and dictatorial goverment. Please share your opinions. (If you want to add historical references feel free) Gizmo & Vacanos: Juan Pablo Duarte y Diez was a noble and humble man of unparalleled character. He was born and lived during a very turbulent time, when many fled the country to save their relatives' lives from the constant invasions from Haiti, and continual atrocities. I remember reading a book a few years ago where it stated how Juan P. Duarte took a trip to study in Europe, as a young man. During that voyage someone on the ship asked him where he was from, he responded: "from Santo Domingo". The man answered, 'oh, you mean Haiti'. From that moment onward, Juan P. Duarte decided that his country should be free from all foreign occupation; All the knowledge that he acquired in Europe, and the United States he would use to begin his plans to liberate our nation once and for all. His political ideals were Republican, and of Liberation; He wanted to Liberate our country, and make it a Republic free and sovereign. His family's heirloom was used to purchase weapons to fight off the Haitian oprressors. Juan Pablo Duarte wanted no personal honor or to enrich himself for his efforts; His calling was far beyond mere personal gain, his mission in life was to free his people, his beloved "patria". He died poor, alone, and in exile, since his more ambitious contemporaries envied and feared his influence. Yet, He achieved his goal. Long live his memory. A man of honor and integrity. Exactly how many men will go out surrender all his wealth for what he believes? Not many even john Adam never relinquish his wealth while he was looking for help in France. Even if you not Dominican you got to admire this man for what he stood in life. Gizmo you can see on that action alone by Duarte our desire for freedom was just too much to be denied. I think the Haitian outnumbered us 4 to 1 even a ratio of 20 to 1 it wouldn’t had matter.
