As if corrupt leaders of this nation weren't enough, most recently they are equipped and directed by self appointed "super friends".

Fact, the last two invasions to over throw a government in Haiti were executed by the UN under USA command, 1994 and 2004.

There is no permanent Haitian electoral council, so far elections are orchestrated and paid for mainly by the international community...

Somewhere between both of our positions is the truth.

Gizmo The recent involvement of the U.S. in the political life of Haiti has been one of those situations where your damn if you get involved or your damned if you don't. It's hard to identify the players intentions who's the good guy and who's the bad guy, that's politics 101 in Haiti.

Dread,

As crazy as it sounds. Haitians in the Dominican Republic have more rights and earn more than most Haitians living in Haiti. I could never understand why the frustrated angry Haitians have more anger for the average Dominican working stiff then they do for the Haitian elites.... let's face it most Haitian posters are clueless as to who to blame for their problems.

You may speak for whomever you choose but I and many other haitianos who have come to understand the situation fully between both countries, know exactly who to blame. For your own interests (and for the sake of mere intelligence), logically it can never be any dominicano. Limiting your scope of the haitian perspective to those who post here isn't completely healthy either. Many know the corruption and the abuse of power that takes place within the country's government. It's been an obvious "given" for many years now, unfortunately to say the least. Those not choosing to acknowledge this- "denial" is too much of an understatement.

Elites and the government have played a definitive part in the situation but that's not the full deck as far as attributing probles to present-day Haiti. There's a lot more to look into from within (better bold that) the country. But I see the point of the article you posted and the subjects have made it easy to receive most of the blame.

Haiti's elite is repugnant. Both Izmery brothers Antoine Izméry and Georges Izmery were assassinated.

The Haitian elite is so corrupt, heartless, repugnant, disgusting and cruel. It has earned the disgraced title MRE (Morally repugnant elite)

Antoine Izméry, a pro-democracy activist and a strong advocate for poor Haitians. He was of Palestinian descent, and was among the wealthiest people in Haïti. He was one of the most prominent backers of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, and helped finance his Aristide's 1990 presidential campaign. Aristide won and became the first democratically and constitutionally elected president of Haiti.

Aristide was toppled and forced into exile by a coup d'etat on September 30, 1991 orchestrated by the CIA and the Bush administration, and funded by the Haitian elite. Izméry founded the KOMEVEB (Komite Mete men pou Verite Blayi) organization, which attempted to discover and publicize the events surrounding the coup and see the return of democratic government.

In 1992, Izméry's brother, Georges, was assassinated by a paramilitary death squad associated with the new regime. Antoine Izméry subsequently lodged a complaint with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights over the death, which sparked a sharply critical resolution from the commission.

On September 11, 1993, Antoine Izméry attended a mass that had been organized by KOMEVEB to commemorate the 1988 Church of St. Jean Bosco massacre, where numerous people had been killed in an attempt on Aristide's life, when he was a parish priest. Few journalists or human rights advocates dared attend, as there was a strong chance at the time that such a gathering would be attacked. At around 6am, the church was surrounded by armed men in civilian clothing. Numerous journalists were beaten and detained, and placed under the charge of Jackson Joanis, who headed the Port-au-Prince police's feared "Anti-Gang Unit". While this was ongoing, a group of 10 men forced Izméry outside, and made him kneel before shooting him dead with a single bullet to the head.
