I'm not Haitian my friend, I recieved my education in many places. Brasil, Germany, Spain, Dominican Republic and Finally the United States. I'm a military brat, and we often travel all over the world as a result. No matter where I go, I'm still Brasileno4ever!!!!!!

There is an interesting book about that meeting compiled by Bernardo Vega, that should raised some eyebrows. Those were the years in the 1930's that the DR was "prodded" by the US, to give part of the Dominican territory to Haiti.
PS: Anyway those two sure have the elegant look of those days.

El tercer volumen de la serie Trujillo y Haití narra la agresión contra Lescot
Por Arismendy Rodríguez / El Caribe

El escritor Bernardo Vega, puso en circulación su más reciente libro “Trujillo y Haití. La agresión contra Lescot”, que abarca siete años de historia sobre las relaciones del régimen de Trujillo con Haití.

Según el autor, durante el período 1939-1946 se desarrolla una historia sórdida, de intrigas y actos inmorales, que revelan cuán ruines eran las principales personalidades envueltas en los sucesos de uno y otro lado de la frontera.

Considera que la obra tiene mucha relevancia para un análisis de las relaciones domínico- haitianas de hoy día, porque mientras Trujillo no permitió que se criticase al pueblo haitiano en la década de los años treinta, a pesar de la matanza del 37, no fue sino hasta 1939 que ordenó una campaña racista contra el presidente Vincent y luego, a partir del 1942, contra el presidente Lescot, quien había sido su amigo y protegido.

Precisa que dicha campaña fue iniciada por Manuel Arturo Peña Batlle con su célebre discurso en Elías Piña “El Sentido de una política”, seguida por libros y artículos de Joaquín Balaguer, Carlos Sánchez y Sánchez y el poeta Tomás Hernández Franco.

Vega señala que el hostigamiento cesó con la caída del régimen de Lescot en 1946, fecha a partir de la cual Trujillo prohibió el ataque racista contra la República de Haití.

Asegura que, a pesar de la prohibición, todo el material bibliográfico ordenado por Trujillo sigue hoy día influyendo sobre el modo de ver a los haitianos por parte de las nuevas generaciones de dominicanos.

El autor explica que su objetivo con la obra es evidenciar el carácter coyuntural y razones personales de esa política, porque cuando Lescot se juramentó como presidente en 1941 Trujillo declaró:

“El presidente Lescot no solamente es presidente de Haití, sino también para mí y para el pueblo dominicano, que lo estimamos tanto, es presidente de la República Dominicana”, y sin embargo tres años después ordenó su muerte, aunque fracasó el complot.
