At the intersection of land and sea, mangrove forests support a wealth of life, from starfish to people, and may be more important to the health of the planet than we ever realized.

Los Haitises National Park - Mangroves

Los Haitises is one of the primary sources of water on the island, and its estimated that its importance will grow as a strategic reserve because of its numerous underground currents.

Mangrove swamps protect the land from soil erosion and the effects of storms. They also act as a form of pollution control, naturally filtering out industrial and human waste. Mangrove swamps, like other wetlands, are important components of the water cycle, absorbing excess water flow during times of flooding.

Going Down the Drain

There's little you can do, I am afraid:
Beaches are closed to the public because of hotels and apartment projects, mines are digging into hills and river banks, sewage pollutes rivers, garbage all over, factories are planned in national parks, noisy 'colmadones' are everywhere.....
People in this country are behaving as if they had another planet as a spare.
Very sad.
No hope.

Los Haitises National Park - Many Taino caves are situated within this area complete with their covered walls of inscriptions. Legends include those regarding Cofresi, one of the last pirates of the Caribbean and founder of Sanchez.

Los Haitises' extensive cave-system with pictographs and petroglyphs is said to have been created by the indigenous people of the island--the Tainos.
