The name of San Juan de la Maguana comes from (1) San Juan Bautista (St. John the Baptist), their patron saint, and the cacicazgo (chiefdoms) of Maguana. Before the arrival of Columbus, the island was divided into 5 chiefdoms and Maguana was one of them, with Taíno chieftess (female chief?) Anacaona. San Juan celebrates its patron saint festivities the 24th of June every year, but different municipalities have different patron saints and different dates for their celebration of the festivities. San Juan became a province under the dictatorship of Trujillo and during that time its name changed to "Benefactor" but it became San Juan again after he died. Some important battles were fought here, including the Battle of Santomé, where Dominicans under the command of General José María Cabral defeated the Haitians on Dec 22nd, 1855. Nowadays, most of the grains eaten are produced here - no wonder why San Juan has become "El granero del Sur" (sort of "The Barn of the South" The province of San Juan is home for the highest mountain in the country and the Caribbean: Pico Duarte and home of the biggest national park in the country: Parque Nacional José del Carmen Ramírez. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ayuntamiento Municipal |

Nice place. Mucha gente amable hay. SJM is a very nice place in our region, we could compare it to Constanza or Jarabacoa in some sense very enjoyable weather the whole year long and refreshing forest summer like I have always said that once some high profile person settles in Constanza is going to grow quick for it's weather. I have always love the weather in that whole area very enjoyable and pleasant. Here a couple of Photos from el Corral de los Indios, San Juan de la Maguana ![]() ![]() ![]() This Batey was built by the Native to make ceremonies and to play Sport What the superior man seeks is in himself; what the small man seeks is in others. |

You immediately feel the air fresher. Maybe the rest of the counrty could learn from Sanjuaneros. |

Yes the whether is really nice, fresh to warm in summers, and mild to cold in winters. notice that San Juan 415 m (1,362 ft) is close to the same high as Jarabacoa 529 m (1,736 ft)... Yes, I also agree and noticed the same thing and I wonder why many Dominican towns are not similarly as clean. If SJM can do it, so can the rest. Edited on 7/6/2010 2:23 PM by guillermone. |
