Some resorts are family oriented, others more for couples, some with reasonable single accomodation. Some people want an excellent beach and services possibly on an exclusive island. Others need lively nightlife, dining experience, entertainment etc. Some people are happier with people from their own country - others prefer a mixture of nationalities. Others want easily to go on trips to see the countryside, go riding, diving etc. ; others want to stay in the resort. Some want to get out to local nightlife others not. Some want an eco-resort and peace and quiet - for example no TV. There are also places that are quite remote. Study the transit times from the airport if you are short of time for vacations. Funds are limited for some. Special inclusive flight and resort deals are available - these may be cheaper than booking yourself. Punta Cana and Las Terrenas could be starting points to read reviews in sites such as www.tripadvisor.com. Caberete caters for the younger crowd. Be careful of Sosua and Puerto Plata as some of the resorts are quite old and have seen better days. Major resorts have multiple reviews - you should get an idea of the type of offering. There is a huge range available and it is well worth taking some time to study before booking. S. |

You have given me a great starting point. I have a friend who invited me to stay with her family the next time she returns home. The only thing, she said when she goes home, its never a vacation staying with family. |

I found that the Puerto Plato area is not that nice and it is a harrowing bus ride frome the airport. The south side is nice if you want the Caribean beach experience. All over the island they do treat the tourists nice, but I wouldn't go near Cabarete. |
