I also agree the Cibao is a great place, little to no tourists, less commercialization and the best location to get a true taste of the real Dominican Republic. However, if you are traveling alone and don't know anyone in town, it may be a harder to establish any kind of a relationship with natives, particularly if you are only passing through. Santiago is far from being a resort city and residents are not there for play, but rather are busy involved with work, school and business activities. Additionally, due to a rising crime rate people are now less trusting of strangers compared to what it was some years ago to make difficult the opportunity for a closer more intimate contact. I remember that I once could easily knock on someones door and say I was a cousin that they did not know or referred by a friend, stop by unanounced and without giving much thought, would be invited to sit in for coffee and sweets as if they had known me for years. Today that kind of interaction though still possible is less common and much harder to come by. Edited on 9/15/2009 12:17 PM by guillermone. |

I think Santiago is a good place to visit if you want a "real" experience. Bars, Clubs, Mall,Landmark(Monumento and Universities) and an overall good clean city vibe. And yeah, Hot mujeres. Brush up on your Spanish. |

My next question is I am a brown skinned african american and I know the social status is different with the lighter dominican and the darker ones. I want to know how they will look at me since I am darker in color |
