I'd recommend renting a car. As mentioned above an SUV is preferred, the roads are a bit rough and a SUV rides higher, you don't have to be so worried about speed bumps.
Consider helping out someone in the DR with a microloan.

Thansks, the flights from Canada are charters. What I need to do is somehow get to that meeting in Santiago from our resort in Punta Cana.

If you do not want to spend much, there is a bus that leaves Higuey to SD, then SD to Santiago. I think that you will spend less than 1,500 pesos each way... I love driving in DR so I would rent an SUV

There are small commuter flights that leave Punta Cana to Santiago. The disadvantage to that is the frequency of flights might not match the schedule. However, there are regular and frequent flights to Santo Dominigo. Best bet would be to contact the airport in Punta Cana and get information directly from them. You will never find that information on Orbitz or on any US web site. You can also contact your hotel and ask to speak with the concierge, he/she might be of some help. The simplest most easiet is to rent a vehicle, preferably an SUV. It will be entertaining. If you take a flight and have to make conections, you will probably get there at the same time as if were driving, but much with greater freedom.

I would much better be on the road than any chicken cargo flight Man those small planes shake too much... With the SUV you can enjoy the towns and food...

TRUE-I agree if I were Dominican or a long term resident who is comfortable, well acquaited and familiar with the country. However, in this case he is in the DR on a short business trip and probably pressed for time. There is no room for error, everything has to function like clockwork. He can not afford to get lost, have an accident or simply break down on the road. In fact I think the best bet is to directly contract a car for hire. There are plenty of good deals out there. Then again once they find out he is a tourist, they will try to squeeze out as much cash as possible. My friend it is a tough call and I don't know what to think now. So guess maybe the SUV rental/ drive it yourself might be the best idea after all is said and done.

Unless you are Curious. That guy would have no problem shacking up with the nearest Vecino wherever his vehicle or bike ends up breaking down.
