SANTO DOMINGO. – Dominican and international experts agreed on the need to modify Law 36 on owning and carrying guns, to heighten controls in the issuing of permits.

The experts spoke in a seminar organized by the organization Latin American Social Sciences Faculty (FLACSO), to analyze the gravity and consequences of heavy and light weapons in civilians’ hands and their indiscriminate use in criminal actions.  They also reviewed the legislation on the matter and made it clear that it needs modifying.

Some of the panelists feel that in view of the increase in violent crimes involving the use of guns, the authorities must apply stricter  controls in their use and possession.

In addition to these measures, the FLACSO feels that drastic sanctions must be applied against those who carry guns illegally.

For years many groups in Dominican society, the Catholic Church among them, have demanded tougher controls against having guns.

The policy of making it more and more difficult to legally own firearms is meant, in the end, to eliminate all firearm ownership. Well meaning or not the idea of taking firearms away from the law-abiding public to solve a criminal problem has never worked and never will. More cynically it is usually a ploy by gun control groups to advance their agenda to disarm the honest citizens using emotional and fear-based arguments.

It is not the person who legally has a fire arm who commits a crime.
It is the criminal who cares not about legalities who commits a crime.
So all said and done only the criminals will have guns.
Well needless to say if there is terrible education and getting worse each year.
Who are these brilliant Dominicans who come up with these stupid ideas!

Apparently Dominican law makers have fallen prey to the fallacy that guns, and not people, are the root cause of crime. John Holdstock said it perfectly in his commentary above. This outright lie has been propagated without merit for years by gun control proponents.

Law abiding citizens' right/ability to own firearms should not be infringed.

Dominican citizens, WAKE UP! Don't let your politicians take away your right to protect yourself and your family.

American Values: Individual Rights
After September 11, 2001, Americans face a dangerous crossroad. Will we realize, once again, the reason this country has become the longest lived, most stable government form in the world today and has grown to become the greatest power on earth -- respect for the individual, as opposed to control by and for the collective -- or will the tragic events drive us to restrict and weaken the foundation of our freedom by willingly accepting inroads against the indiv
