SANTO DOMINGO. – Foreign minister Carlos Morales Troncoso warned that Dominican Republic is not in a condition to accept or integrate the thousands of undocumented immigrants, because it’s a country with its own and pressing problems of jobs, poverty, education and health services, and criticized the United States for not providing more aid to the impoverished Caribbean nation.

In a letter to Mrs. Ethel Kennedy, of the Robert F. Kennedy Prize, based in Washington, DC, Morales states that under a considerable cost Dominican Republic provides those services to Haitians, while the world is turns its back on Haiti’s citizens who escape the horrible existing conditions in their own nation.

He said that the U.S. Congress doesn’t even proceed on something as simple as economic aid through the Hero and Hope Acts, which is promoted by congressional leaders such as Charles Rangel.

The official expressed his surprise by the selection of Sonia Pierre for the Robert F. Kennedy Prize, as well as by the lack of a notification in advance on the award, despite his official position as the Dominican Foreign Minister.

"I fear that, unfortunately, the Robert F. Kennedy Prize is divorced from reality on the island of Hispaniola, and unfortunately there was bad information on the consequences of the work by Ms. Pierre in these parts," he said,

"I am horrified because the Robert F. Kennedy Prize was so ill advised in its policy and so myopic in its award."

In the letter, dated the 8th of this month and written in English, Morales states that the officials of the Prize don’t believe in the work of the Dominican Republic, in its attempt to improve the lamentable conditions under which our Haitian neighbors live, which is worth the trouble to take in consideration.

How about this for a radical concept!
HAITI FIXES ITS OWN PROBLEMS!!
Why the hell is is that people look for the US to come in and fix things in their own country and then when a solution is proposed they scoff at it.

Please.

Haiti needs to correct its own path!
Stop looking for the US to fix things for you!

The US goes only where there is oil? Well fellas lets look at a little recent history. During the decade of the 90's the USA did go into Haiti...spent lives (both Haitian & American),Billions of $$$ and pulled out. Why? Cuz the Haitians themselves have no interest in bettering the educational & infrastructure of the country cuz if it ran well those incompentent asses who rule the place would nt be able to steal from the public coffers and deal in drugs. So screw Haiti let France deal with it.

What can you expect? The U.S. is the one that carried out the coup in Haiti. They're perfectly happy with what's going on there... that's what they wanted! Cheap labor here we come!

IN THE UNITED STATES HAITIANS HAVE A MADE A LIFE FOR THEMSELVES AND HAD MADE PROGRESS DOMINICANS IN THE UNITED STATES HAVE NOT BEEN WILLING TO DO. THEY'VE BECOME DOCTORS, BOUGHT REAL ESTATE AND MANAGE TO HANDLE THE ECONOMIC BOOM IN THE UNITED STATES!

I agree that U.S. helps those countries who have oil and other things that can help them. However, the fact that this minster says that Sonia Pierre shouldn't have received the Robert F. Kennedy Prize is just another form of racism in their country!!! She is fighting for the rights of Domincan born Hatians - not Hatian born Hatians. She is Dominican born but they do not acknowlege her as a Dominican but Hatian - for Morales to say her work isn't something heroic is racist bottom line.

Before anyone says anything about Haiti asking for help...and how the US shouldn't intervene check the history books. Haitians helped out Americans when they were in desperation. Haitians fought in the American Revolution...It was becasue of Haiti the Louisiana Purchase happened...Before you say how can a country who has been neglected and ignored for hundreds of years ask for help....Look and see why they are in that situation.
