Santo Domingo.- The Natural Sciences and Environmental Coordinator at the Dominican Academy of Sciences, Osiris de León, has blamed the proliferation of sump holes for sewage water collection for polluting much of the city’s drinking water supply.

De León said that the drinking water is properly treated at the Santo Domingo Water Authority (CAASD) “but because of the serious subsoil pollution by fecal matter that seeps out of thousands of sump holes, the water gets polluted”.

He pointed out that new housing construction projects are not obliged to install drainage systems.

I am reminded of the manner of the way the Romans laid the Water lines in the cities of the Mid-East during their occupation; then during the"modernization of the cities", those governments laid the Sewage lins on top of thecollapsing water lines. This resulted in huge contamination of thedrinking water and many deaths from diseases.
The unprofessional manner in which the duo of lines are laid in the DR today is very similar. No consideration for contamination prevention is given.

In the first place i don't have too much faith in DR engeneers,
They skip the codes if there are any or pay the so call administ.
to ryde thru and look the other way.
When there are major construction you never see a state inspector, it is left to the engeneers cociense and conciense cost money.
If as he points out the new HCP are not obligated by law to install drainage system, then what kind of bird brain would give them permit for construction?maybe the POLITICOS are full of fecal matter

Going back to Billy H Adams and the Roman & Greek engeneers
then you had love for the arts and were built by soldiers who were ruled by emperors who would not be embarassed in any
form.
You noticed the Roman aqueduct are still being used in Spain and are above ground separated from any fecal matter. For distribution of water it was always above the sewage water and opposite side of the streets main supply. God bless the
Roman builders. They conquered and brought civilization with
them.

Mr Rancier, you are so cynical! to say that the administrators would look the other way! but i really like CONSCIENCE COSTS MONEY!! I have a friend who built several united states federal highways in florida, georgia, puerto rico and the virgin islands. he was observing a group of engineers building a piece of road and suggested to me that the road would not last six months, because they were doing it all wrong. i asked him why he did not say something to the engineer, but he said that he would

not waste his time , because they would not listen. you see, the idea is to have the road fall apart in six months, so it will need new repairs; in the united states we call it make-work. more repairs means more COMISION; you get the picture! surely enough, the road was dead in four months, and has been repaired at least six times in the last two years! no lie!

MIKE ;Maybe it is wise for the preident of DR to contract out Brazilian construction co.since it has been proven that DR engeneers are not good and are always looking for short cuts.
Fed.cotractors in Ga.Fl,.PR VI were superv. by fed inspectors
who take no bribe.
I remember when MAYOR DEEGAN HW was been built under
president IKE national roads construction program in 1957.This
HW was built as if they were building landing strips at a cost of US$1million per mile then,to last a life time.

Mike: In the other hand the East side HW or FDR that was in place and the WEST SIDE HW already in Manhattan across NJ was not built the same way .As i can remeber since 1952 all they did was fill the pot holes with tar specially the FDR HW. Major Renovation of the West Side HW took place in 1990-2003, to bring it apar with Deegan western most part of the Bx, On the other side of FDR.As you can see manhattan is fed by 3major arteries,North to South. The cross Bx EXP way is a mess aproach to GW BRG

i agree with you on the access roads to Mnhattan, but the cross bronx takes a bad rap because of the constant delays and state of disrepair. a lot has to do with the trucks that cross the george washington bridge to rte 46 and rte 80 , and also going north across the bridge. its the reason why the port authority police at the bridge have the weigh station on the bronx side of the bridge, to prevent overweigt trucks from running on the city streets and tearing them up. as you know, any downtown

traffic has to exit at 168 st, not the henry hudson.(im talking about trucks) and since you worked for the mta, please explain to supporters of the metro project that the 241st- white plains road station has been under repairs for YEARS!!! they think the metro can be repaired like a motoconcho if something goes wrong. i cannot imagine what it would cost to do a repair like that. my friend works for IRON NORTH at 240st, and there are always repairs going on at that depot. trains are a pain !

Again you are right on target ,but 241st sta is not top priority for
the pliticians, Had it been on the "A" "E" or "F"line towards Queens it takes a different aspect. They allocate the MTA funds
according to where the wealthy ridership are from and the bitching class and political clouds demographicaly if you get my picture. Must of the MTA top brass & contractors use those .
In respect to DR subways i see it as a fiasco from the start.KW
is twice the cost in DR as compare to NYC

Mike I :
NYC subways were built when labor was cheap and the depression was on, specially the IND and GW BRIDGE 1935.
In 1903 completion of the IRT,BMT there were plenty of Polish ,German, Italians ,Irish immigrants that one way or another brought in a skill with them.
DR populace have no skills and don't want to work eccept for the Haitians that will do anything thrown at them for money w/o
skills. Unless the Jamaicans come to rescue the DR subways
and get pay well ,I see it as a fiasco

Looking at it from the economical aspect.Who is going to pay US$20.00 to ride in such a subway?considering the cost of electricity. NYC gets subsidy from the state+NYC+ federal gvts
On top of that the fare is going up in 2 yrs to $3.00 per rider.
Forget not that all the cost are matching funds by all previously
mentioned gvts. Then you have advertisements, and bonds to
keep the subway cost down for the poor that must get to work.
Periodic Maintanance by 37,000 employees lots of$
