SANTO DOMINGO.- The president of the Dominican truckers grouped in Fenatrado - one of three major unions popularly known as the country’s “owners”- today said they’ll stop their units the first five days in January for maintenance and not as a protest.
Blas Peralta said the truck drivers union doesn’t have a freight monopoly and attributed that version to sectors "incapable" of providing a better service than theirs.
He cautioned Fenatrado would paralyze all the country’s ports if the authorities didn’t intervene in their conflict with the company Industria San Miguel del Caribe, maker of the soft drink Real Kola, which he refused to assign the quota to its members to transport the freight from the northwest province Santiago Rodriguez. "When we say we’ll paralyze the units after the Epiphany, it’ll not be in the ports, but for repairs, to paint and to do maintenance at the shops, and we’ll leave the ports empty so those who have two or three trucks can eat their fill of transporting."
The union leader said the industrialists and the Government must understand that Fenatrado is one “one of the national economy’s wings,” and won’t be “marginalized.” He said neither the Government nor anybody can force them or ban them from stopping their trucks for maintenances.
Peralta said Fenatrado and Real Kola already reached an agreement with the truck drivers from Santiago Rodriguez, after they blocked that company’s plant.

The problem is, you replace this guys and they´ll paralize the public transport. They are really the owners of this country

@rossbuildersinc: They really are the owners of the country, don't subestimate them. They even have more control than the president itself. If Leonel said he will paralyze the country, everyone would laugh at him, not to this guy.
In my opinion you should arrest theese guys that always keep threatning that they will paralyze the country, it's like a conspiracy. Plus, theese guys have to much power, you don't want that, specially when their as corrupt as the government itself.

excuse me gentlemen, but i seem to remember a group with similar power in the United States, the air traffic controllers union, threatening to cripple international air traffic ,by going on strike and shutting down all the airports in the USA. well folks, then president Ronald Reagan called their bluff; he fired all their asses and replaced them with others. it was not an easy transition, and had its growing pains. but it worked out just fine, and many of the social terrorists ended up working in fast food joints, flipping burgers. that is what happens when governments are in charge; there are no sacred cows. there are statutes on the books to control those who seek to control certain aspects of commerce, visiting negative externalities upon society in their quest for personal aggrandisement. the only reason they control the country is because we have let them, and they are bullies. haul their backsides into court with anti-trust lawsuits ; that will fix them!

You forgot the UAW, which went to strike when the whole car industry in the USA is struggling to move forward. When unions get to big they get out of control.

there are 44,000 well trained, well armed military personnel who are doing liitle else but dressing up for parades and playing dominoes. if the Blas Peralta hoodlums want to conduct acts of civil disobedience in a pacific manner, by all means, let them.but if they seek to enforce their will upon the public by inflicting violence upon opponents, then the military should be importuned to quench them BY ALL MEANS NECESSARY. should they choose to resort to the use of weaponry against the citizenry, the military should turn the event into a contest of will and firepower. bullies understand only the vernacular of violence and fear; the military can teach them a few new words!!!

I would ask a very simple question>>>
What is the difference between the Drug Cartels and these Unions?
Both use INTIMIDATION AND VIOLENCE against those whom they wish to CONTROL.
I really see no differences between them. They are BOTH painted with the SAME BRUSH.
"If we don't get our way, we'll paralyze the country, then you'll sit up and take notice of us and our DEMANDS".
If that isn't threatening and intimidating, I know of no other words to describe such actions.
The best way to combat "bullyism" is to stand up to them and hit back forcefully.
I'm a little guy, weighing only 125 lbs, never more, and I learned very young that if I didn't fight back, I'd be "creamed" by thebullies of this world. I fought back and they left me alone, because at heart, BULLIES ARE COWARDS who feed on the FEAR OF OTHERS or their reluctance to act.
Get some GUTS and force these guys into the corner and into oblivion.

The best way to handle these guys and their hangers-on is to declare a NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION EMERGENCY, temporarily confiscate all their vehicles and place Military drivers in charge of them.
Continue until these guys get the message that their modus operendi of instilling fear and intimidation upon the users of their services just won't get the job done.
Collective Bargaining between these Uions and the users of their services, without intimidation and fear mongering will resust in a more stable transportation environment. These guys really don't need to have a monopolistic attitude about their services.
The rank and file are just following the leadership in their anti-social and anti-business actions.

perfectly said, Texas Bill. make it a national emergency issue, and let the government invoke its right to extraordinary measures, such as confiscating the trucks and turning them over to the military until these goons decide to comply with civilised protocols of behavior!

to Rossbuildersinc; they probably do have numerical strength, but the joy of this issue is that they do not have a critical skill that makes them irreplaceable. they are vehicle drivers, which is not exactly like being nuclear physicists. as i mentioned , Ronald Reagan did not take crap off the air traffic controllers union, and they had the potential to cause far greater disruption and displacement than a group of motorists! get some balls and back these goons down; show them who is boss, if there is one!

it is obvious that any businessman importing products will seek out the cheapest sources for acceptable merchandise. in our case ,we buy a lot of products from china, which are cost effective at the source. it is when they arrive here that the prices escalate. transportation costs add about 30% to the cost of the product before it ends up in the hands of the consumer. in the case of transportation monopolies, that figure can exceed 30%. so the public suffers when they have to pay 400 pesos for an item which entered the country at 200 pesos and transportation costs added an unjustifiable 100 peseos to the cost. transportation by trucks is the cheapest form of land transportation ,next to railways. but because the transportation monopolies have the power to disrupt the supply chain, unnecessary steps have to be taken to offset the externalities, which add to costs. manufacturers have to hold excess inventory to hedge against uncertainty of deliveries, because these bums can eventuate a

work stoppage, which will paralyse business by non delivery of raw materials and finished products. excess inventory ties up capital, exposes products to theft and deterioration, and requires bigger warehouse space. with the razor thin profit margins at which some businesses operate, the transportation segment of the supply chain can put producers and retailers out of business in a heartbeat. the lifeblood of business people, and also the public, should not be controlled by bullies. the government has to realise that this is not a political issue. Leonel does not want to put his foot on the necks of these morons, because he would prefer to get their votes than to control them and bring about lower prices for end users and manufacturers. so much for his leadership; he sits by impassively ,while a bunch of goons control the economy by threats and indiscipline
