SANTO DOMINGO.- In addition to the topic of the budget for 2008, president Leonel Fernandez’s administration and the opposition center their political confrontation in the caused disaster from the storm Olga and in the former’s handling of the emergency.

Carlos Gabriel Garcia, the opposition PRD party’s campaign communications director, said that this is a government without authority, where each official does "does what they please, knowing beforehand that nobody in the administration will hold them accountable for their performance."

He said that "lackof authority" is shown with the tragedy in Santiago and the northwest provinces, "with the imprudence of the officials who once again hastily opened the Tavera dam’s floodgates, causing dozens of dead, thousands of evacuees and millions in material losses."

To counter that, Paíno Abréu, a senior member of the ruling PLD party said the opposition isn’t going to profit from the "the manipulative politicking" with the storms Noel and Olga, because the population is seeing the government’s “total resolve" in that organization’s handling to mitigate the damages. He said the PLD as well as its president and candidate are concentrated in making sure everything will come out well and have orders to join the relief effort.

this Paino Abreu cretin should be committed to a mental institution. one wonders if he listens to the things he says, or he is just blatantly defective! for him to say that the president is trying to make sure everything COMES OUT WELL goes way beyond the fronteirs of idiocy. no Paino, you make sure things turn out well BEFORE they happen. i am at a loss to imagine how the loss of so much life and property, and living space ,can be made to turn out well. and i fail to see how one can mitigate damages which have already eventuated. it appears that Leonel cannot even appoint intellegent public relations flacks ; this guy is an embarrassment to intelligent people the world over. we are aware that the PRD and its satellites will exploit this disaster for political capital, but the government handed this gift to them on a gilded platter. and this is a very inappropriate point in time to occupy a garrison position, firing back at detractors.

a little introspection and humility would go a long way to alleviating the pain of victims; decent people are willing to forgive the weaknesses of others, but become rankled when there seems to be little remorse on the part of the incompetents. an intellegent individual such as Leonel should set the tone for these public discourses by requesting that men such as these keep their traps shut, or he should provide an outline for civilised response. he should not allow imbeciles to run off half cocked, making indefensively stupid commentary in some sort of verbal schoolboy food-fight with his detractors. Leonel worries me; i am amazed that a man, who by all accounts is so erudite and urbane, has not been able to grasp the basic rubrics of civilised behavior. then again, he is the man who equates the Metro with modernisation; maybe he equates a formal college education with intellegence!!

Incredible how the government is able to politicize everything instantly. At least they could've waited a few weeks to start blaming each other and denying responsabilities.

Amazing how people are focusing on this "political bla bla bla bla". People should just come down to earth, and understand that Olga & Noel, was just way beyound anybodies calculations. No Dominican Gov (today or tomorrow) of any party would have been able to save any one these people from these type of storms. You people are just going around in circles repeating the same bla bla bla, I am sick of this crap already, there is no true vision with these political parties in DR. The DR needs a MASTER PLANNER (Arch, Eng.'s) who has a bigger vision of the nation's infrastructure as a whole. All the DR needs is a Person with a vision, and real people who share the same views.

The Dominican Government is so accustomed to "locking the barn door after the horse is gone" that they have now 'LOCKED THESELVES IN THE BARN' with no escapr route available.
This "mode" is representative of the manner in which ALL Dominican Governments have been run since thier inception during the time of Columbus. They didn't do an effective job then and still don't.

The narrow corridor of Dominican Political thinking needs to empty into a Ballroom wherein these ideas are dispersed and new ones presented.
The BIG QUESTION is 'Do Dominicans have the mental capacity and enough incentive to do just that'???

Maybe and maybe not.

Time will answer that conundrum.
