Santo Domingo.- The Executive Director of the Dominican Coffee Council, Fausto Burgos Mejía, has handed out hundreds of checks to coffee farmers in the south western province of Barahona, as part of the state institution's program to mitigate the effects of Tropical Storms Noel and Olga on national coffee production.
The checks, for between two and five thousand pesos each, correspond to the first fortnightly payment for the last harvesting and processing phase that seeks to ensure that what is left of the coffee crop is recovered, to reduce the farmers' economic losses as a result of the premature loss of their product as a result of the torrential rainfalls and to control the coffee blight infestation.
