Santo Domingo.- The Executive Director of the Dominican Coffee Council, Fausto Burgos Mejía, has handed out hundreds of checks to coffee farmers in the south western province of Barahona, as part of the state institution's program to mitigate the effects of Tropical Storms Noel and Olga on national coffee production.

The checks, for between two and five thousand pesos each, correspond to the first fortnightly payment for the last harvesting and processing phase that seeks to ensure that what is left of the coffee crop is recovered, to reduce the farmers' economic losses as a result of the premature loss of their product as a result of the torrential rainfalls and to control the coffee blight infestation.

Money like this should be passed out more often to farmers every year or 4 years, so that to help them with their businesses. Instead of giving them the raw cash it should be in the form where they have the oppruntity to order equipment, chemicals and etc through the government, where the government will purchase it for them with the money they were planning to give them. In this way the money is put to proper use, and it helps the internal market by purchasing these products that were made in dominican republic, thus the money re flows into the economy.

I completly agree with you Hatuey. Specially in the Coffee market, where the quality of the product is on par with other recognized countries like Colombia. It's a fact that many countries help farmers so they are more competitive on the global market, so unless the same is applied to the DR, it won't be on par at least on the financial part, mainly because of the costs associated with producing here.
