Santiago de los Caballeros.- Three men between the ages of 24 and 27 have been admitted to José María Cabral y Báez regional hospital suffering from leptospirosis.

One of the patients lives in the area affected by the flooding of the Yaque del Norte river during Tropical Storm Olga earlier this month. According to reports the area is infested with rats as a result of the accumulation of mud and garbage.

Hospital press officer Sergio García said that this was an initial diagnosis. In recent weeks nine cases of leptospirosis have been reported, and four people have died of the disease, which is mainly transmitted by rat urine.

It is obvious by casual observation, that the government is AGAIN not responding to Public Needs.
While Health Officials struggle to contain the various disease outbreaks amoung the population unfortunaate to have experienced displacement, these officials do not have the budget with which to combat these outbreaks through either medications or educational notices to the public designed to mitigate the effects of diseases on the communities so affected.
Just another effect of the governments failure to protect their citizens through ongoing allocation of funds for that purpose.
One would think that any government would have the humanity to care for its citizens.
Not so in the Dominican Republic.
Concentrate on what will influence the public favorably, ie., GOOD PUBLICITY, rather than what will solve the social, medical and economic problems perpetrated by inhumane inactions.
